I’ve tried to install Avast 5 IS on my XP laptop but the firewall does not work:
When I click on fix now or start firewall I get no response at all.
Setup log seems to indicate that the firewall service returned an error code:
01:27:24 vrb/sys Starting service aswNdis2
01:27:24 vrb/sys Service aswNdis2 started, errcode: 0x00000000
I’m attaching an extract of the setup log (file is larger than limit).
I’ve tried uninstalling, using the uninstall utility and reinstalling but to no avail.
I tried the repair option under the program setup but that didn’t work either.
I made sure that there were no oem*.inf files in the c:\windows\inf\ that contained aswNdis as someone suggested.
Also tried using CCcleaner to clean up the registry.
After spending 4 hours rebooting/uninstalling/reinstalling, I’m giving up.
I believe the problem was caused when I initially tried to install Avast 5 IS and windows refused to start normally.
Okay, you tried all I know about the prob. The only idea left: does your quoted try also include oem*.inf files with a reference to aswNdis2…?
If this is true (what I believe), I’m out of ideas. Sorry.
I am having the same issue. Purchased Avast Internet Security that included license for 3 machines, loaded on machine #1, no issue. This machine had Avast 4.? free version running on it. Installed v5 right over it and no issues at all. Machine #2 had Avast 5 free version on it. Again, installed the new IS5 program over it and everything works EXCEPT the firewall. The “Fix Now” button does not work nor does “Turn On”. Both machines have XP-Pro with SP3. Machine #1 is wired to router, machine #2 is wireless. Windows firewall is still turned on for both machines. Tried the safe mode Avast un-installer found at the support website. No luck. Stuck for ideas. Put in a support ticket, but nothing back yet. Does anyone know if they are working on the issue? Thanks!
I’m asking that because I read in a thread something about a problem with avast and wireless networking… Helps maybe to close in on the trouble source.
I can’t get the 2nd machine to go on-line via cable to router. Not sure why. Cable looks OK. Too many variables to spend hours more on this problem. I assume Avast will fix the issue if wireless is a problem with their new software or it will not be acceptable. I also assume the windows firewall, while still turned on, is managing that part of security for now. Oh well.
OK, I couldn’t let it go. I tested the wire and it works fine on machine #1 but not #2. Therefore most likely an unrelated matter of the internal wired network adapter. However, I pressed on and noted in Local Area Connection Properties there is a Service or Protocol missing named “Avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Driver.” It is on machine #1 but not on machine #2. It is shown under services but greyed out and in order to install one needs the driver disk. I think this might be the problem. No idea how to fix yet. Wondering if you do?
Great that you stick into it!
I don’t have any idea, but I will try to get a developers attention to this thread.
Stay around, this may be of value to all of us. And again thanks for being so “stubborn” on the plot!
I got the same problem.
I installed avast 5 IS ( 3 computer license) on Win XP over an avast free version and windows hung after the first restart.
After that I still got the message that the Firewall is not working. I de-installed avast and reinstalled – no change.
On another machine I installed avast 5 IS on Win Vista and Firewall works fine.
See my earlier post(s). Are you saying Windows Firewall has a problem with Avast Firewall? My machine #1 is doing fine with both turned on. I think it has something to do with Avast missing a Service:
“In Local Area Connection Properties there is a Service or Protocol missing named “Avast! Firewall NDIS Filter Driver.” It is on machine #1 but not on machine #2. It is shown under services but greyed out and in order to install one needs the driver disk. I think this might be the problem.”
No I’m speaking to everyone - that if you have a firewall problem, then it is good idea to say what firewalls will be running when the problem is evident, and Windows firewall is one sometimes people forget about.
If you only have one firewall running and you still have a problem, then fine - can troubleshoot.
but if you have more than one, then best say so, and save us having to ask.
As I said before I have OA premium firewall and AIS suite firewall running at the same time on one computer and I haven’t had any worries. Not my ideal, which is avast Pro with OA firewall. Also I have had third party firewall, and forgotten about Windows firewall being on, and no noticeable conflict between the two.
But is very common for system to exhibit erratic behavior when two firewalls are running at the same time.
ndis filter driver doesn’t seem associated with avast products - I think bitdefender and jwire
Oh boy I found my thread I just bought this darn Internet security am on Win xp NO firewalls running at all! MY windows hung up on reboot had to go to last known config. My settings tell me I have no Avast firewall. So i click Fix now to no avail.
Waits with baited breath before I add to my desktop computer. This is my laptop. I am ready to get my money back at this point.
I too am on a wireless network and I can see my other network.
I uninstalled Avira through add.remove programs. Hope i gave enough info. I am a greeny by the way be gentle with me.
Malwarebytes Antimalware found three infected registry keys.
I let the software remove them an re-installed avast another time.
I still get the same problem.
I also run the AVCleaner from GData in order to remove remaining objects from the previous AV program. It removed 19 objects, but after another new install of avast I still cannot start the firewall.
Windows Firewall is off, as far as I know there s no other firewall on this computer running.
