Avast 5.0 IS Not WOrking Anymore

I Bought Avast 5.0 IS edition last week and installed it on my three computers.

  1. Vista 64
  2. Vista 32
  3. XP SP3

I started up all 3 computers this morning and they were running fine. Computer 1 has been on all day and still runs without any problems. Computer 2 was shutdown and restarted once so I could move the comps location and when it came back up, Avast loaded with a red circle and X in the circle. I used the “Fix It” button, but that didn’t change anything. I Tried the repair function and that didn’t fix anything either. I uninstalled it and reinstalled it and that didn’t fix anything.

I shutdown computer 3 as that was the other computer I moved and when I started it back up, Avast started up, but the Firewall module will not start. I tried the same procedures as I did with computer 2, but still it refuses to start up. Unlike computer 2 where nothing works, only the firewall wont work in computer 3.

All 3 computers are using version 5.0.462.

I did submit a ticket for computer 2. I didn’t bother with computer 3 since it’s probably the same problem as computer 2 has.

Any ideas?

Update. Found version 5.0.418 and it’s working fine on Computer 2. Will leave it on that build until I get more information.

What can be happening…

  1. An old avast installation and not properly uninstalled. Maybe searching for “aswNdis” references into C:\Windows\Inf\oem*.inf files. You can use Windows Search or FileSeek (http://www.binaryfortress.com/fileseek/) for that. Then you can move the files to another folder. Boot. Try installing again.

  2. An old 3rd party firewall not properly uninstalled.
