Avast 5.0 Pro

I just purchased this product and downloaded it. The problems were awful. It completely shut down my network and e mail. I was unable to make any updates or configuration changes and every program I tried to run locked up and froze. I finally uninstalled it and most things went back to normal. I was able to get on the web and e mail starting working again, but I lost my VPN which I desperately need for work and my wireless printer is still off line. I tried to contact Avast but the silence has been deafening! I plan on stopping payment for the product if I do not get resolution quickly. Am I the only one who has had problems with this. I run Avast Free on another computer (older model) and it works great. I thought I was doing the right thing purchasing the product rather than using the freebie but am very sorry I chose that course. Has anyone else had these problems?

System is Dell 3000, XP Home SP3.

Check your computer for Malware with

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
always run update so you have latest database before you scan
click the remove selected button to quarantine anything found
if anything found you may post the scan log here

have you removed any previous installed antivirus software ?
have you run a removal tool to remove any leftovers ?

I run the Security Tango (www.securitytango,com) on a regular basis which includes Malwarebytes (great program I agree). I will run the whole program again just to be on the safe side. I will try a removal tool to make sure there are not any orphan files left from the uninstall of AVG. I think the problems are much bigger than an easy fix though. I will keep you apprised of things.

i recommend to use Microsoft Malware removal tool it runs in the background http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.aspx

Sorry but this Microsoft Malware removal tool is not what I would call a security tool. It is hardly an application as you have no control over it, it isn’t resident, it isn’t on-demand, it doesn’t have signature updates (until the next monthly security updates) and an out of date security scan is worse than useless.

Malwarebytes did not identify any threats. I also ran CWShredder, Stinger, and Spyware programs again just to be sure. I finally got my VPN back running but had to uninstall and reinstall. The last item is my wireless printer that is still offline. Will also need to uninstall that I imagine. This has been a nightmare and still the silence from Avast Tech Support is deafening. I will definitely not touch this product again - cannot afford to lose another day of work. I only hope I can get my money back!

Your quickest support usually is here on the forum as we are here 24/7.

May I ask if you ran the AVG_Removal Tool to get rid of all remnants that can cause conflicts with other antivirus programs; their tool is specific to their AV program? You must REBOOT after you use the tool. You can find it at either one of these sites:

http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
http://www.askvg.com/ultimate-collection-of-uninstallers-removal-tools-for-all-popular-anti-virus-software/.

See if this works for you and let us know.

Also, do you have any other security software on your machine currently or previously, and if so how was it removed?

Thanks for the links. I used the program’s Uninstall program when I removed them but went ahead and ran your links as well just to be sure. I am really gun shy about trying this product again after all the problems. I am not sure I will ever get the money back but I would rather be out the cash than deal with these problems again.

mhpepp,

We would like to help you. If I understand you correctly now, everything is working now except your wireless printer?

Do you have any other security software on your machine that you did not mention earlier…either previously on your machine or currently? What is your firewall?

My printer is not working as yet, but I have not had the time to do an uninstall and reinstall and am using a second printer for the moment. I had previously used AVG but it slowed my system down so badly and it started interfering with my e mail send function (I use Thunderbird). I used the AVG uninstall utility to remove it and to be safe also used the Uninstall link published earlier in this thread. I have a Linksys router and use that firewall so I have disabled the Windows firewall so they do not clash. Other security software includes Malwarebytes, CWShredder, Stinger, and Super AntiSpyware (free edition). I never had any issues with AVG until they upgraded to their 9.0 version and then things were a mess. That’s why I elected to go with Avast (based on recommendations by Nick Francesco a local computer guru, www.asknick.com. ) I run Avast free edition on an older PC that runs Win 98 (Really old!) and it works perfectly so my experience with Avast had been good.

mhpepp,

Your issue may be with avg, as a few others have mentioned here on the forum.
Your other security software should not create a conflict with Avast.
Perhaps you can consult with your printer vendor or go on their web site to see if they can assist you. Perhaps a driver got corrupt or software is needed for an upgrade may resolve your problem.

Should your Avast problem reoccur, please let us know while you have the problem, and we will have you submit a mini-dump file to the Avast Team for analysis. Thank you.

Simply run this tool to clean any remnants of previous AVs: http://www.appremover.com/
-And check whether your problem has been resolved

ziucqea,
See post #6 - the OP was already given removal tools and used them.
