I’ve been using Avast for a year or so now on this computer and it’s worked great, but as of last night task manager has been saying it’s using up 3.8GB of ram and 13% of my cpu at all times, even with all of the services paused. Also, I’m not positive it’s related but my internet connection was drastically slower. It has always used way less than that before and I’m curious as to why it would start doing it now… I ran a full scan and found nothing. Right now I’ve uninstalled it and everything seems to look fine but I’m about to reinstall it and hope the problem is fixed… Anybody have the same problem before or know why it might have gone off the deep end? I use the latest version that the updater gets me btw.
I just reinstalled Avast 5.0 free and the problem is still occurring.
How could Avast! use 3 GB of RAM by itself? Something ain’t right.
Any other security program that could interfere?
Old antivirus before avast?
Avast is the only antivirus that has ever been on this computer. And according to task manager, Avastsvc.exe is completely capable of and happy using 3.8GB
Ok strange.
What your processor type and name ?
How much ram you got ?
What your OS ?
What others securitys you use with avast! ?
Intel i7 920
6GB ram
Windows 7 Home Premium
No other security programs have ever been on this computer
32-64 bits ?
Do you got any others securitys on your pc ?
64bit, and no
Strange got one of 12 gb ram and a processor of intel i7 with the same OS and no big usage like this.
Hmmm…
Do you use the OS Firewall or another one ?
And if you turn off behavior shield does your avast! use big ram usage again ?
I’ve used Windows Firewall with it since I got the computer over a year ago and I haven’t had any problems until now
The ram is used whether all the services are stopped or not
Ok wow. Did you try to repair the install ?
Tried that, then I uninstalled and reinstalled and every time avast starts up the process immediately starts using all of my RAM
with removal tools too ?
If yes then well i cant really say more maybe wait an avast! team member as i did all my best for what could have sense to avast! or something that could interfere.
Sorry.
Yep, thanks for trying
No problem i hope avast! team will come soon and help you.
I uninstalled again, reinstalled, and when it was done installing it proceeded to start leeching memory at about 10mb/second until it hit 3.8GB. Once it did, the amount of CPU time it was using went up to 13% and my BitTorrent download speed dropped from about 243kB/s to 10kb/s. I opened the avastUI and it told me something had turned it off and it was unsecured. I turned it back on and my RAM usage, CPU usage, and download speed went back to normal. I’m no expert, but it sounds to me like a virus got a hold of my Avast somehow and is hiding behind it on task manager… everything looks normal again but I’m still suspicious that somethings up
EDIT: RAM usage just randomly started climbing again a few minutes after I finished typing this. It’s not done climbing yet but the problems obviously not fixed
Look like avast! p2p is scanning your torrents…
And that strange i think Malwarebytes Free should go a look on your system…
Also i would recommand Windows Defender real time to be on with no membership.
So scan 1 per 1 with the program. Otherwise they could detect some file of the another that is scanning.
If Malwarebytes did find nothing then i dont know really…
How about doing a boot scan with Avast! after scanning with MBAM?
