avast 5.0 won't allow me to send email?

I’ve had avast for years and just upgraded last night to free 5.0, since then I can’t send emails unless I turn off avast. [I have no problems recieving emails however]

I have windows XP - use outlook express 6 and have had the same email address for years.

the error is:

“The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender’s e-mail address. The sender’s e-mail address was ‘myemail@myemail.com’. Subject ‘Fw: test’, Account: ‘mail.mchsi.com’, Server: ‘mail.mchsi.com’, Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: ‘550 5.1.0 myemail@myemail.com sender must authenticate for off network - POL105’, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC78”

I’ve searched the forum and don’t see a fix. I also tried to turn off the mail shield in the new avast and can’t figure that out either. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks ~Teresa

Teresa,
Welcome to the forum.
Please remove your live email address unless you want a lot of SPAM.

Looks like it’s the port your using but wait for some one else to pick up on this.

Port: 25, Secure(SSL):
I think this can be it. Open your mail program and go to the account settings, if there is any SSL settings, remove it and try again

I think not, as you missed the essential part of your quote SSL is No.

Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,

This bit “sender must authenticate for off network” seems like trying to send without the authentication requirement set.

Gee…I’m not exactly sure if this is correct but here’s what I see. When I go to my mail properties in outlook express, then to the ‘advanced’ tab, there is not a check by “This server requires a secure connection [SSL]” for either incoming or outgoing.

Is that what you mean should be unchecked? Also, I called my cable company and they said they’d recieved several calls today with this problem and asked me if I used avast and if I had upgraded it lately.

You never know if they know what they’re talking about or trying to put you off so I came here…lol

  1. Which is why I said I didn’t think that was the issue.

  2. I used to get this error on occasion with OE, when I tried to send an email using an account that I wasn’t connected to, e.g. it wasn’t the same email account as my ISP. To use an SMTP server you must either complete the user authentication details or have logged on to the ISP linked to that account.

Thanks David, I didn’t see your post until after my reply. I went to my accounts…then properties…then servers…then checked “My server requires authentication” and everything seems to be working fine now.

I’ve never changed that setting so I don’t know what was going on…just so it works I don’t care! lol

Thanks bunches ~Teresa

Teresa,
+1 for what Bob said above. Recommend to remove your email address.
You can do this by navigating to the message, and selecting “modify”, near the top right of the window.

Oh…good idea. Done!
Thanks

No problem, glad I could help.

It may be because effectively you are going through an intermediary process, the Mail Shield in 5.0, which works differently to the old Internet Mail provider of 4.8.
