Avast 5.0594 Slow Startup

  1. I guess so…!
  2. No, it’s done in the avast settings…

Opening the avast user interface is very slow - 30secs to 1min before it opens. After opening it, clicking on the tabs also sometimes get slow responses that have several secs delay. I’ve installed ver 5.0.594 on 3 PCs now, two were program updates, and one was a clean install from web download on a clean install of WinXP. I have other PCs that use older avast 5 versions that don’t have the slow down. Just seems like the slowdown is a problem with 5.0.594.

Hello Asyn: Thanks for clarifying. Cecil

You’re welcome…!

Hi Brian,
We’d be happy to help sort things out with Soluto
I’ve replied to your email on Thursday, please get back to me and we’ll continue from there.

Silviu - Thanks for recommending us

Any suggestion to the above, other than waiting for a new version?

@ virus hater,

Please refer to Vlk’s response to this in thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=61179.0 for a complete explanation.

That doesn’t help, as it doesn’t seem to be my problem. I don’t have a slow startup problem. My problem is the user interface is very slow to open. The “summary” tab is always slow to open. The other tabs, “scan computer”, “real time shield”, and “maintenance” always open normally.

Just found out something!!! When you close the UI and reopen it, it will open the tab that was opened last time. And since the slowdown seems to be caused by the opening of the “Summary” tab, IF I CLOSE THE UI WHILE THE “SUMMARY” IS NOT OPENED, THERE IS NO SLOWDOWN THE NEXT TIME I OPEN THE UI.

I have duplicated this problem on multiple PCs. And I had no such problems on older Avast 5 versions. This is clearly the problem of 5.0.594.

This is a known problem that is being looked at. I believe in the next release it should be fixed.

There does seem to be a delay with the latest version. My system is similar to the OP’s and it used to boot to useable in 55 - 60s; now it’s more like 90s.
Avast’s Services are set to load after Windows’ services and have just defragged the HD (Opera loads in 4 - 5s now  ).
Everything else is up and running in about 50s, then Avast keeps the cross and then the ! up to about 80s, then RAM drops down by about 50MB then goes up by about 25MB then slowly starts increasing. This did happen with v4 but much earlier and quicker.
Only other security software starting is Comodo Firewall - Comodo AV isn’t even installed.

@ Giraffe,

Your signature indicates that you are using Avast 4.8, yet the latest build is 5.0.594. What version are you using?

Besides Comodo FW, what other programs are loading on start up? Are any of them essential? Can you delete or delay the non-essential ones to speed up your start up?

I would also suggest cleaning your cache, temp. internet files, etc. with something like CCleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ - it is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. Many of us use it here.

As you read in Vlk’s thread, the shields of Avast do start up in sequence, and the next release will improve the speed of this, but please take a look at your start up programs. Question: Did this longer delay occur after installing Comodo?

SafeSurf,
Thanks - Profile amended!

System is cleaned out daily, but not much internet stuff as I use Opera and that’s often closed on ‘Clear and Exit’.
Most of the programmes that i have starting are small utilities; Comodo is the only other big one. I’ve tried disabling everything from starting and then ran tests with one at once. Only Avast made a large difference; Comodo only a few seconds (and that’s essential to load).

Good news re. the next release.

Just something that popped up in my mind, do you use any system utility that has the ability to clear “Prefetch Data” like CCleaner ? If you have such an option enabled, you should disable it and see if that improves your startup times.

PS: Please note that CCleaner does not enable that option by default, but it is worth checking. Also, it might be a good idea to check if not using CCleaner for a while and see if that improves things (maybe a bug in the utility)

PPS:Yes I’m aware of Vlk’s explanation on this matter, just trying to make sure that this little bit does not make things worse.

Why do you think about prefetch…??
And whom do you want to adress in this thread…? (many different posters…!)
asyn

@Asyn, because CCleaner was mentioned here and it does have the option to clear that data. I was trying to address Giraffe’s problem. In fact I’m going to do a bit of experimenting myself as I do use CCleaner, but my system usually sleeps overnight so I rarely observe the boot process.

I see.
Thanks for your feedback…!

@ Silviu C.,

I use ccleaner with prefetch and it does not delay my start up time with Avast. I’ve been using it both software, since ccleaner first came out, and Avast on 4.0 then 5.0. But feel free to experiment on your machine.

Well, according to Soluto… there’s a difference. The last two reboots were part of the experiment.

I will reffrain to use CCleaner for about a week and see what happens in that timeframe. I will also not install/uninstall that might add something that runs during startup.

I don’t use CCleaner - found that it borked one or two things.

Occasionally Prefetch will be cleaned out: everything deleted manually and a basic Layout.ini file copied to the folder, but that’s usually after months rather than days.

Yes, Windows will purge prefetch data by itself once in a while and keep the 32 most used entries. No need to “help” it. I was merely asking people that have this type of problem and use CCleaner to experiment. Software does sometimes interact in weird ways.
