I’m running XP SP3 with Avast 4.8 Free Home Edition and Zone Alarm 8.0.298 and everything is fine; getting email with both Eudora and Outlook Express. When I upgrade to Avast 5.1.889 I can’t receive any email…the internet connection fails just for the email clients. I can browse with IE and Mozilla Firefox. I can view my email as webmail via the browser but not POP3 with Eudora or Outlook Express, unless I disable the Avast email scanner. Turning Zone Alarm off doesn’t make a difference. Help?
I think that 5.1.889 changes its internal rule for network connection.
When I used 5.0+COMODO, there was nothing to happen.
When AVAST upgraded to 5.1.889, I can not browse anything.
Finally I uninstalled COMODO, everything go back.
I suggest that you should REMOVE ONE (not turn-off) (AVAST or Zone Alarm).
You cannot turn off a software…but you need to actually uninstall it to test it.
There have been reports by many on the forum with conflicts of ZA firewall and Avast. I would start by uninstalling ZA firewall per the vendor’s instructions, reboot your machine, and see if this fixes your problem.
You will, however, need a firewall since the XP firewall is 1-way and very weak. You might try something like Online Armor, Comodo (without AV), or Outpost to name a few. Avoid Ashampoo, which is a known conflict with Avast.
Let us know if this fixes your problem. Thank you.
I have a new laptop windows 7 home premium.
Downloaded avast free 5.1.889 and I am unable to access my Comcast e-mail.
Is there a setting that needs input?
Thanks to greener and SafeSurf for helping me solve my problem. I uninstalled Zone Alarm and rebooted. Then upgraded to Avast 5.1.889 and rebooted and all worked very well. I then downloaded and installed the current version of Comodo, rebooted, and everything works well. I have the anti-virus software I trust and now have a firewall that works with Avast. Thanks again!
