Avast 5.1.889 - XP pro won't shut down

Hello everybody.

Since i updated Avast yesterday to 5.1.889, windows XP Pro remains on “Windows in now closing” when i shut down my computer (mouse can move => not frozen). I uninstalled Avast in safe mode, and no more problem. Reinstalled Avast, same problem : i have to switch power off manually after waiting a few minutes.
Computer is clean, chkdsk does not show any problem… Seems only linked to the new version of Avast.
Any idea, please ?

Thank you very much in advance.

what AV did you have before avast ?
have you uninstalled it ?
have you run a removal tool to clean out all leftovers ?
you can find one her http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

Happened the same to me in VirtualBox XP SP3… But, some boots after that, the computer shut down correctly.
Any other security program that could interfere?

Hello
Thanks to both of you for answering.

My only Av for years has been Avast. I uninstalled it last night after

  • restoring from a 2 days old backup => no more problem
  • upgrading again avast to new version => problem again
  • uninstalling avast again in safe mode with avast uninstall tool => no more problem
  • downloading, re-installing, re-registering Avast => shutdown problem
  • chkdsk, Malwarebytes aso => computer OK
  • complete scan with Avast (new version) no virus detected.

So, I suspect Avast (upgrade) to be related with the problem. Il kept it and power off manually my computer, but does not seem very clean

To be complete : I’m running SP3
Only tried 5 or 6 shutdowns
Firewall : Look’n Stop … never interfered before.
Running in the background : Spybot Search and Destroy…
But all this for years now

Ideas please ?

Sincerely
B

Get red of Spybot Search and Destroy as Malwarebytes is much better.
Never used Look’n Stop firewall either.

You can allow shutdown messages and see if any gives more info.

You can also check Windows Events to check if something is wrong (error) in the shutdown process.

Hello

Thanks for your replies. Just came back from re-installing from scratch my brother in law’s computer (he did not see any use to a firewall or antivirus, so guess what happened !).
Ok, I uninstalled Sybot.
Will study and apply the links to MS support tomorrow when i return home (helping family to move).

Will keep youn informed, but right now want to thank all of you and tell you i really appreciate the hand (and time) you’re giving.

Sincerely
B

You’re welcome. Feel free to come back any time you need help or just to change experiences 8)
