Avast 5.1 lags online gaming !

Avast 5.1 free lags online gaming !
Since the 5.1 i have lag problems ,the previous version , latest 5.0 was ok.
I ve tryed even the 884 beta build and the same. The beta adding strange issues along the lag ,explorer crashes ,etc.

As i usually want the lightest AV config i m using only the real time shield with exclusions made properly.
When i use Avast ,though i shoot the other one ,my hit don t seem to register. The game folder is excepted so i really don t understand the problem and wth is scanned.
Firstly i thought it s something with the firewall ,but once i uninstalled Avast problem disapeard. If i disable real time shield it takes around 5 minutes for the game to behave close to normal ,so there must be some other driver involved too.

Install Avast - > lag ,uninstall Avast → no lag /network lag only .

I consider the issues strange and i m thinking if somehow the free version has some invisible firewall module that installs now or if the real time shield does some in the cloud thingy in the background.
The input delay drove me crazy and uninstalled it.I needed to install another A… AV product which i dont like.

CPU is a AMD Phenom 2 X3 720 BE ,MSI 790XT-G45 ,4Gigs of DDR 2 RAM ,HDD WD 640 BE ,MSI ATI 5770 ,mouse G5R ,kb G11 and XP SP3 all up to date updates.
Games affected CS:S ,DOD:S ,BF BC2 and any other online game.
The Avast silent mod does nothing.
Maybe some DPC latencyes showing up in the background.I cant imagine how does the game experience looks when you use all the shields it must behave like a slowmotion movie.

Depends on which game you’re talking about… if the game was using Game Guard (essentially a rootkit, used to prevent cheating), there was a known conflict between avast and Game Guard up to avast beta version 5.1.884.

The problem should however be solved in the latest release version 5.1.889, so to start, I’d recommend upgrading to this version and see if it makes any difference.

Thanks
Vlk

CS:S Counter Strike Source or Day of Defeat Source are Steam based games. They use VAC anticheat.
Also in the process tab resides the PunkBuster A exe proces ,from other games that use PunkBuster anticheat system ,no matter the game you run it s there waiting for it s little brother PunkbusterB.exe .
I will take a look at the latest version.

Never had problems with Punkbuster, it’s used alot on my rig as i play BF:BC2 almost daily. With one of the 5.1 avast! beta’s i did get a Behavior Shield(i have it set to ask) alert on punkbuster executables but i simply whitelisted it and it works fine. Also never had any problems with avast! lagging any of my online games…

Have to admit though, i don’t use Steam and i avoid it like the devil so i am not sure how games are running via Steam with avast! 5.1. However if that VAC anti-cheat system is anything similar to Game Guard i guess it could really be conflicting with the new Behavior Shield. Worth investigating i think.

Darth.Mikey ,what operating system are you using ?
Are you using a 3-rd party firewall?
What is your PC config ?
I don t know what is the issue maybe it s I/O writes reads thingy ,i don t know ,but definetelly it drags my system.
Maybe it s a DPC latency issue in the background or avast conflicts with some drivers in my config.
I m also using a X-FI Xtreme Music forgot to tell.
So there are creative drivers along ATI/AMD drivers , 3-rd party firewall drivers ,sandboxie drivers ,mouse drivers and so on.A nice mix of drivers.Maybe the AMD AHCI drivers for the SB 7x0 southbridge suck ,it can be that too.
In any case 5.0 was better on my system.
After i see what other people think about latest build i ll reinstall.I m to lazy for the moment to reinstall having in mind avira with proceses exceptions and folder exceptions made regarding firewall and games seems to not bother me.
