Avast 5 and Outlook 2000

I am running Avast 5.0.507 and Outlook 2000. this has always been stable. However today on opening Outlook for my Calendar I see the Avast splash for MS Plug -in and then get the MS Outlook ‘encountered a problem and needs to close’. How do I get this error sorted. I have tried Safe Mode, shut down firewall, disabled Avast, system restore all to no avail. Interestingly my laptop running the same programs is OK!

Adding to my post - Incidentally, With the error message I cannot access the ‘Tools’ or any heading on the Outlook toolbar to disable any plug-in!!

What is your OS ?
Given you have Outlook 2000 I’m thinking win 2000.

It may be that the avast plug-in is already disabled, don’t know as I don’t use any version of MS Outlook.
Outlook 2000 > Tools menu > Options > Other > Advanced Options > Add-In Manager.

Using XP sp2. As per my last post I cannot access the Tools section or any section on the Outlook toolbar because of the error message.

XP SP3 has been available for for over 2 years and support ends shortly.

XP SP3 provides many Critical Updates and performance enhncements.

Yokenny - but this does not explain the sudden loss of Outlook! I think this is something to do with the Avast MS Outlook plug-in.

There are two outlook plugins: ashoutxt.dll which scans emails and asoutext.dll (only in AIS) which is the antispam toolbar. The latter only works with Outlook 2003+ due to severe limitations in the APIs of the previous versions of Outlook. Do you use avast free? If so, then the problem might be related to the first of the two plugins mentioned (or might not be related to avasdt at all …) Have you tried the new beta refresh?

I have found that I can rectify the problem of Outlook 2000 crashing only be using a system restore point back to April in Safe mode. There must be a problem with an Avast update definition or program after Avast 5+. Would the problem go away if I disable the Aavst 5 plugin via Outlook Tools? I do not use outlook for emails (only use Outlook Express) only for calendar and contacts. Will Outlook still work without the plug-in disabled? Are Avast aware of the conflicts with their AV and Outlook as showing up on various forums? and are they goimng to do anythng about it?

yes it will work fine with the plugin disabled

here’s the ansswer to all those who have recently updated from avast4 & installed avast 5 & are having error messages coming up when they open their OUTLOOK 2000.
In outlook 2000 go to tools menu> options>other>advanced options>add-in manager.
you will see a list of programs and one of them will likely be avast 4 (checked off).
Un-check it.
close outlook and re-open. I just did this and no more error messages!

Yes, and no more A/V protection on incoming emails either.
