Avast 5 and Secure Email

I’m just trying to clarify how Avast 5 works with secure email.

Basically, in my email client, I should disable SSL/TLS/etc and use standard/default ports for email transmission. When I receive or send an email, Avast 5 gets in the middle, it establishes a secure connection with my email server, the message is transmitted securely, Avast 5 de-encrypts the message, scans it and then delivers it to my email client via an unencrypted connection.

Is that basically it now?

How can I actually confirm that Avast is talking to my email server over an encrypted connection?

I have to do nothing at all other than de-select the encryption option in my software? Avast 5 figures the rest out on it’s own?

That’s right, no SSL and select port 110 for incoming mail. Depending on your email client and provider, some have found that changing the smtp port from 25 to 587 works better, but otherwise you deselect SSL in the client. If you want to verify things are being scanned, go to mail shield/expert settings/behavior and send yourself a couple of messages. Things like gmail don’t have unencrypted connections, but if your provider uses 110 already for unencrypted connections, you can usually just change that to whatever port it uses for encrypted connections and still not select SSL for avast! to work.
