Avast 5: Cannot Update Virus Definitions

Hi…was wondering if anyone else was having problems updating virus definitions with Avast 5. I have PC Tools Firewall with Avast having full internet access. Whenever I try to update definitions, it says “Updating Step 1/2…Initializing…Please Wait” and it looks like it’s going to begin the download but than times out after 3 seconds or so. Anybody knowof a fix or what the problem may be??

I have exactly the same software as you - avast! 5 and PC Tools Firewall. My install of avast! is able to update with no problem - both manually and automatically.

I would suggest that you try “repairing” your installation of avast! by going through the “Add/Remove Programs”. If that doesn’t work then the next step would be to delete the entries for avast! in the PC Tools Application list. As a last step I would totally uninstall avast! and then reinstall.

Hope you get it working . . .

What happens if you do a manual update ?

Does PC Tools Firewall allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

The repair through “Add/Remove Programs” says the install was repaired, but still not able to update. I deleted the Avast entries for Avast in the firewall and still could not update. Uninstalling and reinstalling Avast is how I had to get the latest program version and virus updates a few days ago, so I know that works, but I don’t want to have to keep doing that all the time to keep getting updates.

It won’t update automatically or manually.

Then what errors are being displayed when you do a manual update ?

Have you now done as suggested about deleting the avast.setup entry in your firewall ?

There are no errors displayed - it attempts to download, but after 3 secs it just stops and says done as if everything was ok, but of course without downloading anything. And yes I did delete the Avast entry in the firewall program.

So what VPS version do you have, avastUI, Maintenance, Update section, the current one is 100331-1 ?

100311-1

Then there is nothing to update. Everything is working absolutely fine.
Where is the problem? 8)

The problem is the current version is 100331-1, not 100311-1

Ooops… sorry. Too many 3s and 1s…

Are your settings set as in the screenshot?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Tech, what I always wanted to tell you: would you insert a bullet 5a) Reboot between 5. and 6.
8)

Yes, same settings as the screenshot

Ok, did all this. Same thing - program version is up to date (5.0.462) but virus def’s out of date (now I have 100309-0, current version is 100331-2). Cannot update.

Did you reboot after final installation?

Yes

ashupd.exe allowed in the firewall?

Same problem here…

When I try to update manually it tells me that the program and base are up to date but my versions are : 100228-0 (28feb2010) and 5.0.377

There a line telling me a new version is available (5.0.418) but won’t download it !!! :frowning:

btw it’s also written : Server unknown
