5.0.377 is a beta.
download the free version from www.avast.com and install, let’s see what happens then. Should be working thereafter.

I don’t see this listed among the applications in the firewall. But even turning the firewall off doesn’t help.
Just reinstalled avast and it works now

Okay, very nasty idea: search for ashupd.exe and start it by doubleclicking on it.
What happens?
Found it in the Alwil folder…absolutely nothing happens when you click on it. I’ve downloaded the program 3 times now after uninstalling the previous version. Each time it says I have the laatest prg version, but the virus def’s change each time

Well…although all of the help and suggestions provided by others here in the forums did not solve the problem I was having with Avast, everybody’s efforts are much appreciated. However…for reasons unknown, Avast just finally auto-updated itself!
Well… I had a really stubborn box here. The solution to this was to not just uninstall, but also install Avast in safe mode. Worked w/o any issues after that. (Dunno whether it can be a recommended solution, but worth a try.)
