Avast 5 cannot update

Greetings,

When I try to update Avast 5 on my computer, it always says “No Connection.” This type of problem has occurred in other antivirus software as well as this one.

I use Windows XP Professional SP3, Ashampoo Free Firewall, a broadband connection, and Avast5.

What other information should I supply?

But, are you connected?
Is avast allowed to connect into Ashampoo settings?
What happens if you disable the firewall?

Yes, I am connected or I wouldn’t be able to write this to you at all!

I set Ashampoo to allow all connections (or so I think). When I took out the Ashampoo firewall, the same thing happens. But I’ll ask this: which programs should I allow?

avastsvc.exe
avastui.exe
avast.setup
as far I know…
But it is quite strange that you can’t update… Are you using a proxy? Did you change avast settings?
Which was your old antivirus?

No proxies.

My old antivirus was Avast 4.8 Home (the FREE version). That software can update fine.

First try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that didn’t work then a clean reinstall of avast 5.0 is probably best:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.545 http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

I got the idea that you have had multiple anti-viruses at some time on this system when you said:

So what other AVs have you had installed before on this system ?

Hi Frigem,

perhaps my posts in the following link will help you - try to change the default settings in the way I write there!

Good luck!

Tried it, Sky.

I haven’t installed other AV’s on my system, or rather, I use one antivirus program at a time.

Mine as well attach the image.

It isn’t as simple as only using one AV at a time as some are notorious for leaving remnants which can have an impact on future AVs, hence the what other AVs have you had installed before on this system (as we have lots of links for removal tools) ?

That error message is typically a firewall blocking avast’s update process avast.setup.
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

I know you have said you disabled the firewall but on occasion even when disabled they have running low level drivers that might still block access. So check for an entry for avast’s avast.setup and if present delete it.

Thanks Dave.

I think I’ll explore some more options.

You’re welcome, good luck, that is me for the night, almost 4am here.
