Avast 5 Causing BSOD

Hi,

Been using Avast for over a year now. Thanks for a great program!

However, since updating to Avast 5 it’s been causing a few problems.

I’ve experienced 3 BSOD’s within the last 2 weeks. I first jumped to the conclusion that it might be an out of date graphics card driver. But updated that and still happening, i decided to get to the root of the problem. Microsoft identified aswSP.SYS as the likely problem.

What version do you have, the latest is 5.0.594 ?

How did you install version 5, directly over 4.8 or did you first uninstall 4.8 ?

It may be best to do a clean reinstall:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.594 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Yes, i have the latest version 5.0.594. It updates whenever an update is available.

I can’t remember if did a clean install. My old memory is asleep half the time! I think Avast just updated one day and there was avast 5! But not sure…

I will go through the steps you posted. Hopefully it may help.

mark8691, please send me a couple of the latest minidump files from \Windows\Minidump folder to kurtin@avast.com. I’ll look why you got those BSODs, thanks.

Just sent them now. Thanks for taking a look.

Have done a clean install of Avast as suggested by David. Though saw no sign of the old Avast 4 on my pc.

Sad to report that this is still occurring.

Any feedback to the files i sent?

Seems to be a few people with similar issues, do you guys know whats causing this?

Is the only answer to uninstall Avast now?

What other security programs (if any) are installed/active at the time?

Might be a pointer; the definitive answer will (hopefully) come from PK.

I did have ZoneAlarm, but uninstalled that earlier this week. I know that program has been causing a few problems recently and a recent BSOD named that as a problem. I can live without Zonealarm though.

But just now, I had another BSOD caused by avast. I’d really hate to say goodbye to Avast! First BSOD it’s caused since reinstalling on the date noted on this thread though…

But really hate being in the middle of some work and then that damn blue screen attacks! :stuck_out_tongue:

Just reregistered Avast yesterday. I wonder if registering your copy causes any problems…

I know of no problems caused by registration, sorry. Never heard of any.

Well, still been getting these BSOD’s. Shame its not been addressed.

Have uninstalled/reinstalled a few times. Sent in crash dumps, but never been informed about what the problem could be. :frowning:

I appreciate the free program, but not much use in its current state.
