I upgraded 2 machines (XP and Win 7 64 bit) from 4.8 to 5.0.418 Free. I noticed several system files in the virus chest of each. On the Win 7 machine, kernel32.dll and wsock32.dll were there. On the XP machine, there were similar Windows system files. I believe that 4.8 stored system files in the chest but I wasn’t aware of 5.0 doing that. Can somebody clarify? Thanks in advance.
I have see only one other such report on the forums where these are in the 5.0 virus chest, and the thought was that these were carried over from 4.8.
Personally I can’t see how that happens as it didn’t happen in my case as I also had some other samples, etc. in the chest and after an install of 5.0 over 4.8 history gone, nada.
So I don’t believe this is a feature of 5.0, though I could be wrong, if you scan the files inside the chest you should find they are clean. So if clean and the actual file is in the relevant system folder, you could delete them (or first extract to a temporary folder and delete the chest copy) and see if 5.0 replaces them and I suspect not.
I scanned the files in the Avast 5 virus chest on each upgraded machine and all files were clean, and the actual files were in the appropriate system folders. I’ll extract them, delete them from the chest and report back here if 5.0 replaces them. Thanks for your assistance.
No problem, glad I could help.
