Avast 5 cuts out my internet

Long time user of NOD32 (v2-4) but decided to go with Avast 5 (after seeing the AV-Comparatives reviews, scores). Had it for 2 weeks installed on 2 seperate machines :

PC 1 – Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit (wired connection to router)
PC 2 – Netbook with Windows 7 Starter 32bit (wireless connection)

Both computers will drop the connection randomly throughout the day! This NEVER EVER happened with NOD32 as my internet connection is very stable 99.9% uptime (25Mbps connection download). I removed Avast from both PCs after couple weeks of this, and went with Avira Personal FREE edition. Not one drop in connection on EITHER computer. After reading that Avira doesnt have mail or web shield in the Personal one, Im now wanting to take it off and go back with Avast (or pay for NOD32 again).

Any ideas why Avast is dropping the connection? It has 7 shields… could it be I should disable one or two? I dont use p2p apps or IM. But would those be the cause? There are no other real time anti malware or anti spyware apps running on the PCs. I keep both very clean from startup items.

Which is your firewall?
avast does not connect or disconnect. It does not establish or drop connections.
Difficult to say… generally this is a firewall, or router, or the connection itself, who knows.
Webshield is a local proxy, just scanning the Internet traffic. It does not have anything to do with the connection… ::slight_smile:

Ensure that all remnants of your previous AV are gone:
NOD32 Removal Tool - http://www.nod32.nl/download/tool/nod32removal.exe, right click on the link and select Save As or Save File (As depending on your browser), save it to a location where you can find it easily later.

Uninstall Avira Antivir Completely
http://www.themisteriosos.com/uninstall-avira-antivir-completely.htm

no firewalls on EITHER pc, not even the windows firewall is on. the router im using is a cable modem/wireless router (2 in 1) and like i said never have a drop in connection, with both systems, with NOD32 or AVIRA… the ONLY common thing in both PCs is AVAST, must be something its doing to randomly drop connection. I will try the uninstall tools and do a fresh install again on both PCs, hopefully it will fix the issue.

I have had avast since beginning of the year 2004 or 2005 dont remember ezakly eanymore(the year i remember january), i had problems before that with all kinds of antiviruses then one of the best was Norton antivirus but it was sooooo slow.
Avast is fast, allways been, and it does not disturb ur connections, theres something wrong with ur rooter settings or something , i have had lots different kinds of rooters hubs and sepperate wifi stations no problem with the internet, and it did not slow down my 35 mbit/s download speed i had changed my half open connections on my computer and don all kinds of other wteeks and all the free versions of avast have worked berfectly on all my pc-s and laptops and my friends pc-s and familys and all other i have installed avast free or avast home (free) actualy it boosted theyr system beformances…

Atm i have 2 rooters(both with wifi) and a hub on my home network, i replay on the toppic with a pc (runs linux and winxp at same time both with avast) that has a cabled connection to one of the wifi rooters, atm 2 another PC-s, and 3 laptops, all but 1 running avast (the one i’m doing research aboat the best antiviruses and trying different ones, a alternative for avast of the ones that can run actively with avast with no complications wahtso-ever…

I love avast 5, i’m thinging of getting theyr best solution , some bundle (like getting the most licences for the least of money) becouse i wanna give some to my friends and family…
In avast 5 there is few new things that i have wanted for ages, like from the start of the deskdop type operating systems antiviruses first came out…

THe only thing besides to balame the rooter, i can imagin, is that u have to update ur vista or vin7 cos u know vista is vista, and vin 7 :\ hmm maybe some old buggy drives , duno it should run fune normaly, its built like linux so it shuld have no problem with avast :\

Do Full updates for the avast’s and both win’s drivers and the win’s theyrselves… (After u have completly removed the bits and peaces of the other antiviruses, they tend to mess up ur pc when theyr left in the computers and new antiviruses are installed.)
And if the problem presists then it’s something in your network settings thats doing that.

DavidR,
I too am getting random wireless drops, often when I change web page. I cannot find firewall that Avast 5.1 (on Windows 7) refers to. Windows firewall is disabled and Linksys tells me it is definitely an AV firewall problem. I tried your av uninstall and get some foreign (looks like Dutch or German) dialogue box. “NOD32 Verwijderen” Dit programma probeert … U heeft reeds … met dit prgramma?Do you have a link in English?

Yes the link is to a dutch site, but the file is the nod32 uninstall tool, so it should work. You can also try one of these sites and see if they have any nod32 uninstall tools/instructions.

See http://www.askvg.com/ultimate-collection-of-uninstallers-removal-tools-for-all-popular-anti-virus-software/ for others not listed above.

You don’t say what version of avast you are using (or I missed it), the only avast version with a firewall is Avast Internet Security, the avast free/pro are anti-virus only and no firewall.
