I have a laptop used on the internet and a work colleague has a desktop both running Windows 2000 SP4.
Since Avast 6 does not support Operating Systems older than XP SP2 these computers need to continue with Avast 5, which has been very reliable with a low overhead of CPU and memory.
When will the virus definition updates for Avast 5 be discontinued?
Sadly when they are I will have to find another Antivirus application that still supports Windows 2000.
I don’t think it is much of an imminent issue here as avast5/6 use the same definitions, avast4.8 uses a different VPS stream and is on life support pending the switch being thrown.
However, win2k should still work with avast6, provided you have full updates to SP4 and rollup1.
Which is pretty much what you need for avast5 anyway. You also need - MS Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable. Again this is I believe required for avast5.
The good news is Version 6 uses the same definition as version 5.
I’m happy not to update at least for a while since even if it will run smoothly on Windows 2000 no doubt ver 6 has a greater demand on resources.
Both systems have 512MB RAM which once was considered good but now low.
Without an expensive 512MB PC133 SODIMM I can’t upgrade the laptop.
I am working with Avast6 on 2 PC’s with Windows 2000 (SP4+UR1).
One has 256MB RAM and the other one has 512MB.
And BOTH PC’s are working without problems. So I recommend to install Avast6.
