AVAST 5 Free 5.0.507 slowing down PC

Long time user and lurker. Seen similar reports in the forum so thought I would share my experience in hope that a fix is being worked on

Prompted to update from 4.x last week on Vista 32 bit system, I accepted and did the update. Since then system has slowed considerably. After coming out of sleep mode it takes a very long time for programs to start up. Task manager shows CPU (all 4 cores) at 100 % and a lot of RAM in use. Trying to work or open firefox etc takes forever. Since reading the forum seems like Avast is performing its scan etc. I permanently disable AVAST and try returning from sleep again and system runs normally, no waits.

Even after re-enabling avast, system tends to run slower, especially email and browsing. Its not as fast as 4.x was. Uninstall and reinstall, clean etc has not helped either

I have a gateway FSX Q6600, 3 GB RAM , 500 GB HD, 8800GTS video card

On the other hand I also have the same version on my laptop running windows 7 64 bit without any problems. Works great

Thanks for reading
Bill

good luck and write back how it went or if you neeed more help,

I did the uninstall, reinstall, reboot and it did not help. I also use Ccleaner, spybot and do regular cleanings. I use PC in home business so I keep it pretty well maintained

Thanks for the tips and the welcome
Bill

Spybot could mean troubles, sometimes…
If you want to dig deeper, you could try to drop spybot and see if your problem is solved.

I dont have it running at start up or in memory. I only run it manually.

Thanks

So is avast only slowing your system after coming out of sleep mode…?
asyn

Yes thats correct. If I do a reboot it works ok.
Bill

Well, I had one user with the same problem. An update of the BIOS fixed that.
But be very careful, if you really try this. You won’t like to mess your BIOS…
asyn

I know what you mean I dont like it either but my BIOS is update…

thanks
Bill

I don’t know, if this will fix your problem…
But if you like you can try the new pre-release version:

Well so far so good. Out of sleep mode is not slow anymore. Something in the beta may have fixed or repaired it
