Avast 5 Free ....... scan from windows explorer problem

I have removed and re-installed Avast 5 (free) four times now. (using aswclear5 and uninstall). Deleted everything I could find in the registry. Rebooted several times. I cannot get the ‘scan from explorer’ to work. The option is there, but nothing happens … Under settings, I have 'show special scans, & ‘automatically open results’ checked. … In explorer settings, the scan parameters are grayed out? (pic) Is this normal? I installed the whole program with the exceptions of the messenger scan.

I am also running ‘superantispyware’ and ‘malwarebytes’ (both on demand… not running in the backgroud). This used to work … I don’t know if it quit after an ‘update’ or what is causing it. Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Sandy

Look the text at the top of the picture

Read the comment at the top of that window, This is a predefined scan, so some options will be read only, etc.

This scan has effectively very limited user input as the right click scan is set to scan whatever it is that you right click on and select, be that a file/folder/partition/drive. So it is at that time that you are selecting the parameters and why you can’t make any change to the Selected areas.

You can uncheck the Scan all files option, which would then allow for changes to the Recognise file types by their: options, however that would be ill advised as you want the context scan to be thorough and not limited.

So your image is correct.

ok … the image is correct … but I still cannot right-click and scan? Do I need to change something to be able to do that?

In Vista/Windows 7 double click on Computer then Local Disk (C:) then navigate to the file you want to scan then right click on the file then choose Scan

In XP it is My Computer.

I can get to explorer ok … and right click on the file … the option to scan (icon) is there, but nothing happens when I choose that.

I have 'show special scans, & ‘automatically open results’ checked. … it is just NOT scanning or showing me any results from explorer. Scan logs does not show that it is working from explorer.
Thx.
