Avast 5 freezes on boot time scan upon finding virus

Hi all, first time post so please be gentle

Whenever I run a boot time scan with Avast 5, it will freeze upon finding its first virus. I get the choice of what to do with the infected file (delete, delete all etc) but the system is completely non-responsive, so I cannot choose!

The only option is a forced reboot (pressing the button on the front of the case). :-\

I was using Avast 4 before this, but completely uninstalled that before installing Avast 5. I’m using Windows XP Professional SP3.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

hello, welcome to the forum have you tryed updating the program through avast 5 ui, maintainance/update then program update latest version is 5.0.396, reboot then try bootscan again…hope it helps

Hi, thanks for your speedy reply.

Unfortunately, I have tried upgrading to the latest version… same problem. I even uninstalled and then installed a fresh copy of 396… no dice. :frowning:

I do hope I can find a solution to this. I’ve used and loved Avast for years, and I find the new interface very appealing.

Has anyone else suffered this same problem with a boot-time scan?

hello sorry to hear about that, i use a 64bit version of windows 7 so boot scan not an option although i have installed and ran boot scans on other peoples computers without any glitches (xp sp3, vista windows 7 32bit versions), and with boot scan working before any other programs are running it can`t be a conflict between 2 or more programs…1 last thing check your windows updates to make sure your all up to date with them, failing that maybe 1 of the Alwil team can shed light on it…

Please post the boot-time scan log file.

Thank you for your reply.

Couldn’t have said it any better myself, really… ;D

Check your VPS date & version (see under Maintenance/Update engine and virus definitions).
We made some changes earlier this week in the boot-time scan and they are delivered within the Engine update. But you don’t seem to have the updated version.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve just checked and seem to be up-to-date:

I’ve just had a thought, though. Could there be an issue caused by my leaving an external harddrive plugged into the system on bootup? I’ve noticed it doesn’t appear in the above log as a drive to be scanned (C:, D: and Z: are all internal drives/partitions). I’m not at the machine to try now, but could that cause the freeze?

could be a cause of your problem, try selecting the drives to be scanned on boot-time manually (select additional areas) including the external drive rather than “default” All Drives…

The external drive won’t be scanned at boot time but it should not cause a problem with the keyboard.
Please try the boot-time scan again with virus definitions version 100204-0 and post the log file, we will see whether it was correctly updated.

I’ve got exactly the same problem… :-[
