I have installed Avast 5 in my windows 7 machine with no problems. I would like to upgrade to 5 on my XP machine too, but want to know if the problems I have read about have been fixed before I do so. I am happy with 4.8, but like the new face of 5.
Since you seem aware of the posts about XP problems, you must know there are still recent ones. If these problems where widespread, given the amount of Avast! users, you would see many, many threads, I’d imagine. I myself had a couple problems when I installed Avast! on Win7 and after(fixed now), whereas you have had none,…point being the problems are likely isolated and mostly fixed quickly if possible
I would recommend doing a CLEAN install of build 5.0.545 (not an upgrade) for your XP.
Make sure you have no remnants of any AV on the machines (even if you have to go into Safe Mode to double check). Have plenty of memory on the machine.
After installing, reboot!!!
Then you can set your settings and enter your activation key and update your definitions.
I’ve had to install Avast on enough PC’s to realize now the clean install and reboot at the right time were key components to not having issues. I’m not saying you will never have a problem, but at least this has finally worked for me.
On the Win XP SP3, AMD1600,608 MB RAM system you do not indicate if you are using MBAM Free or Paid.
If it is the Paid version then it could have a problem and I upgraded my XP Pro system to 1.5GB RAM to help relieve the problem of the system hanging.
Why would you use MSE as well as avast! on the Windows 7 system?
Windows Defender is not good on XP systems.
Hi,
I am using MBAM free on the XP machine only. I do use Windows Defender on the Windows 7. My signature is a bit misleading as I put down all the things I have on the XP machine, but didn’t list the ones for Windows 7. There just isn’t enough room to show everything for both. If I have trouble with Windows 7, I will update the signature.
I just upgraded/installed Windows 7 on my Vista machine as it had crashed, so installed Avast 5 on a clean machine. I had no problems on Windows 7, and love it on that machine.
Should I remove Windows Defender from the XP machine? I have 1 gig of RAM on the XP machine. Is that enough? It updates automatically on the Windows 7 machine each morning.
Thanks for the info.
