I have Avast 5.0.462 with Win XP and use Thunderbird 3 and Outlook Express 6. In the last two days I encountered error messages - unable to send or receive with both email applications.I have been in contact with Comcast support and have checked and rechecked the server settings for incoming and outgoing mail and everything is in order. I have tweaked the port settings and was able to receive mail in each email application but was unable to send. In frustration I disabled the Avast Shield Shields and low and behold both OE and TBird are fully working.
When the issue first arose I got input from the TBird forum and it was suggested that I uncheck Use Secure Authentication and select STARTTLS for Connection Security for both Server (pop 3 incoming and SMTP outgoing).
Has anyone else had a similar problem? I do not want to disable Avast each time I use either of my email apps - that would be much too risky. Any thoughts on what could be causing this issue? Could recent Avast update be the culprit>
I updated and made the resets you suggested. Neither TBird nor OE will work when I select either NONE or STARTTLS in Connection Security for both Server Settings and Outgoing Server . Incoming mail only works with SSL/TLS selected (this also changes the port form 110 to 995).
However, cannot send mail in either TBird or OE apps unless I disable Avast Shields.
OK, we go for thunderbird only, now…
Set connection security for outgoing/incomming servers to ‘none’ in thunderbird!
In avast mail shield ssl settings remove all entries.
Restart your machine and try to send/receive mails. (should work now!)
Post back your results.

Thanks, ASYN, when you say…“In avast mail shield ssl settings remove all entries” do you mean the uncheck the two boxes entitled Scan inbound messages and Scan outbound messages? Those are the only two setting I find.
I’m confused - when I open Mail Shield I have the two choices Scan inbound mail and Scan outbound mail. There is an Expert Settings button which when opened has a menu with several selections - one of which is SSL Accounts. In this window I see Host name information with two entries, i.e., POP3, Port 110 with no encryption and SMTP 587 with TSL encryption.
Are these entries the ones to be deleted?
Incidentally, when I unchecked scan for incoming and outgoing my TBird worked for both receiving and sending as did my OE account?
ad 1. Yes. Delete these and restart your machine. Try to send/receive mails and post back.
ad 2. Yes, this also works, but your mails won’t get scanned for viruses, etc. That’s not what you want.

Both OE and TB are fully functional at last thanks to your assistance. Hopefully, the problem will not return - I notice that after deleting the entries in SSL Accounts and rebooting, that the entries returned unchanged.
Many thanks and kudos for your time, patience and input.
