Like the title says, avast can’t enable the firewall. I recently downloaded avast 5 Free Edition then then installed my license file and successfully upgraded, but now avast can’t enable the firewall for some reason.
I tried the step listed in that web page, but I still can’t enable my firewall. In fact, when I tried adding an application to a group the application wouldn’t be added.
If you upgraded from the free Avast! 5 to the suite, did you use another firewall before? if so, how did you uninstall it? maybe there’s some leftover of a previous firewall…
Maybe the upgrade didn’t go as it should and it would be wise to uninstall and reinstall the suit from zero.
For that, you could use the clean up tool posted in the forum: http://public.avast.com/~forejt/aswClear.exe
Alright, I think I found the problem. After running the uninstall tool and restarting my PC, I ran the installer specificaly for Internet Security and i provided it with my license file. However, once it tried to install the firewall, it said it failed to install the driver for it and provided the following details:

What was your previous firewall (FW) and how did you uninstall it? If you did not use the vendor’s uninstaller tool to uninstall it, then reboot your machine after this, please run it again and reboot your machine.
Then do an uninstall in Safe Mode of AIS and clean install in normal mode of AIS. Let me know if this fixes your problem. Thank you.
Make sure there are no other firewall drivers listed for your Network Adapters.
Check in the Control Panel under Network And Internet, go to your adapters, click properties and check. It could happen sometimes that drivers for other firewalls don’t get properly removed when uninstalling the software.
Make a Safe Mode cleanup with Comodo System Cleaner, enable the search for all entries in the Registry Cleaner. That should help also.
Okay, I’ve never had any kind of firewall besides the one that is built into XP. I ran Comodo in safe mode after running the avast cleaner in safe mode, then rebooted and ran the installer in safe mode, then restarted again and booted windows normally, but after the loading screen for XP goes away, it flashes the BSOD then tries to boot normally again and again but to no avail. I finally had to tell it to boot in “last known good configuration”, and I’m STILL not able to get the the firewall to turn on
It sounds like you still have remnants of Comodo FW on your system. Please scroll down to Comodo here: http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/ for additional information and run the uninstaller tool, then reboot.
After this, if you don’t already have a cleaner, clean your machine and registry with CCleaner. It is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. There is a Slim version available as well at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds - 4th option down. It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner; make a back-up in My Documents prior to doing a “fix” of your registry.
Reboot. Now do an uninstall in Safe Mode of AIS and clean install in normal mode of AIS. If this does not fix your problem, please submit a ticket in with Avast at https://support.avast.com/. You can continue to get support here in the meantime. Thank you.
Hi SafeSurf and MasterTB, the op has stated that he or she has not had any other firewall other than windows. Kiro please delet comodo system cleaner as all comodo stuff is rubbish and will probably leave even more remnant’s of junk in your system, best one to use is what SafeSurf has suggested (ccleaner).
My error. I was reading what MasterTB wrote. Disregard the Comodo uninstall part of my last post.
@ kiro,
Install and run CCleaner Slim Version as I suggested. Reboot. Uninstall and do a clean install of AIS. If this fails, then submit a ticket with Avast as I suggested in my previous post. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
