Hi all,
I know there are related topics around so apologies if I’m repeating, but I haven’t been able to find a discussion that’s exactly the same…
I’m running Outlook 2007 and have just downloaded Avast 5(free edition). When trying a send/receive I get the following message:
-Receiving’ reported error (0x800CCC90): ‘Your incoming (POP3) e-mail server has reported an internal error. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). The server responded: -ERR Cannot establish SSL with POP server 193.238.nn.nn:995, SSL_connect error 336142597’
If I turn off scanning inbound messages it works fine.
Thanks very much for the advice - I’ve tried this but it doesn’t make a difference.
However I have found that on my husband’s laptop he has the same setup and it works fine, the only difference is that he has Vista and I am running with Windows 7. Could this be the issue?
I have made sure that all settings are the same on mine as on his, including the ones mentioned in the article you’ve quoted.
I wouldn’t have though the OS would make any difference.
The SSL option in the Outlook email accounts should be unchecked and avast would then handle the secure connection.
Check that the avastUI, Real-time Shields, Mail Shield, Expert settings, SSL Accounts match up with your Outlook email account settings. The exception being if your email uses SSL (secure encrypted) protocol, then avast would detect that and this should be reflected in the Encryption column.
If they are the same, try deleting all the entries in the avast Mail Shield, Expert settings, SSL Accounts and reboot. That should recreate the entries.
Thanks David, this worked!
The settings were the same so I deleted everything and rebooted and it now appears to be checking OK and letting mail through.
…hang on I spoke too soon… I checked, and the “scan inbound/outbound messages” were not checked. Now that they are I’m getting the receive errors again
Sorry, I don’t use Outlook so I can’t really check anything out, the only other thing I can suggest is ensure that the avast plug-in within Outlook isn’t disabled.
Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-ins > Manage Disabled items.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
Well that was the managed disabled plug-ins, presumably you checked in the normal plug-ins section. I don’t know where that is though, presumably Outlook 2007 > Tools > Trust center > Add-ins.
You could try a clean reinstall and see if that has any effect:
Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.594 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).
Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
