avast 5 newly installed, but won't run, what's up?

I recently installed Avast 5 but it would not run and I am now vulnerable.
It does not show the current version, release date, number of definitions or even the current version.
Clicking the fix or run button does nothing.

Would appreciate some help here.

Try avast repair and reboot

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

What was the previous AV installed (if any) before Avast, and how was it removed?
