Bit of a nuisence really. I am on broadband via speedtouch USB Modem device on portable laptop IBM 600e. When i have unplugged it and rebooted laptop next day away from my internet computer table. It tries to Connect up via my Dial up networking randomly even after shutting down numerous times. Soon after desktop has appeared it randomly tries to dial up. Did not do this on Avast 4.8.
Workaround this, Created Dial up icon on desktop. And set never dial connection. When i need to connect to the internet i just click the icon and Dial up this method & avast updates ok as per normal.
This is very similar problem when i had norton on this computer when i was using windows 98. many years ago! with connexant usb modem. Did same idea as above and cured it!
This same computer has XP sp3 and is fully patched and updated.
First, let me say that I’ve never used a USB modem to connect to the Internet.
In Windows, Internet Options | Connections did you have it to “Dial whenever an internet connection is not present” or “Always dial my default connection”?
When I first got cable internet access here, I changed to “Dial whenever an internet connection is not present” and left my external serial port modem connected. If I disconnected the ethernet connection from the router to the computer, then the old serial port modem would dial my old ISP. It never tried to dial when the ethernet was connected. For connecting to the old dial-up ISP while the ethernet was hooked up, I set up a DUN shortcut(probably similar to what you mentioned) which dialed out. The issue with the older Windows version(probably still with WinXP Pro SP3) is that the dial-up connection took precedence and all internet traffic went thru dial-up until the modem was hung up.
I dumped the dial-up ISP after the subscription expired at the end of that year, so I can’t check if it would still work the same. I didn’t even hook the dial-up modem to this computer when I got it.
Yes have managed to stop the annoying trying to connect thing. As i had a problem with this under windows 98 with norton. It seems that avast is requesting a dial up under booting process as the build is different to Avast 4.8. I will try some more experimenting & remove Avast 5 and and revert back to avast 4.8 as there is still plenty of issues with V5, and wait untill next Avast 5 program update is out!.
