Now that Avast 5 has been released for general download, do you have to be an IT manager to get this bloody thing to work properly ? IMHO it is still far too buggy and lacks any current up to date responses from the developers. Someone sugested that they are either hiding or are snowed under with dumps. Possibly a combination of both : In light of the earlier FP fiasco and now this cockup, when will Avast 5 be as stable as Avast 4.8 was ? I live in hope
yesterday I spent a great deal of my day fighting with 5.0
no luck. I’ve removed it and for now using AVG.
It would help if we knew what the problem is - then we could look for a resolution
most people seem to have solved their issues with this build:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54491.0
and/or with disabling the behavior shield…so what I’m saying now is enough with the bashing of Avast all over the place OK ?
the problems:
when i tried to scan files, Avast froze.
when I tried to access my favorite webpage, avast write that there is malware and he is blocking it, but nothing is blocked.
doesn’t want to download updates, both manually and automatically.
THIS NOBODY CAN REPAIR BY GIVING ADVICE, THIS IS 5,0 NOT READINESS. sorry for my English.
When you installed 5 did you install over 4.8 or do a clean install ?
I’ve installed over 4.8
but then eventually I removed all, and made a clean install. most of the problems are still left. only it doesn’t freeze so much. but still doest download updates, neither of them. writes that something is downloaded but it is 5kb only.
I have Russian version, that’s why I didn’t want to install the new buid. I assume it’s not russian.
Enddays, you were told recently in http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54495.msg461410#msg461410 and probably elsewhere about the problems of having two antivirus programs installed at once, even if one is disabled. You got a couple of suggestions involving removing Eset and ignored them and did not answer. If you choose not to cooperate with those trying to help you, there is not much that can be done for you. But contention of security programs is a fact, often not something Avast! can fix, and removal of one is often the only way to get things working properly for the other-see http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54489.msg461931#msg461931 for example. And Alwil has been all over the board recently, with two new releases today that solved many of the existing problems. So advice is same as before:
- Uninstall Eset (at least AV portion) and reboot
- If Avast! 5 is still having problems, uninstall with the cleaner at http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54385.0 and reboot
- Reinstall Avast! build 396
- Post the results if there are further issues
UPDATE: Note that there is an Eset uninstaller discussion at http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2289 , but read the warnings carefully before you use it.
I believe the GUI and language remain the same - it is the internal workings that have been modified - give it a try
Baltic112, same questions for you-sorry, but it is getting too hard to track the maze of postings
What other security software do you have installed, even if it is disabled?
What security software were you using previously? How did you remove it?
I didn’t have anything installed other than Avast 4,8 and XP native firewall. Why it doesn’t update itself and why now many pages are “infected” according to 5,0???
you got the reports and logs about the infections? screen shots ? + addresses of detected sites ?

I have this from www.odnoklassniki.ru - Russian one of the biggest social network. I am sure it’s clean.
can you give the exact link to that site, it’s truncated on the screen shot. Also, please break it >>> hxxp (and not http) is that the only site, you said many sites ?
Hy sded, you are correct in stating that I didn’t answer a couple of suggestions and I am sorry about that. We have an elderly female relative in a Nursing Home atm, and it has got to the stage that we are getting around 2-3 calls a week to drop everything and rush to the Home and I am on a bit of a short fuse, anyway off topic. When I do get a chance to use the machine it mainly consists of trying to get Avast 5 to work properly as I have loved this prog since I first installed Avast 4 a while back. Regarding Eset, as I said I stopped it loading at startup and thought that this would be enough to avoid any conflicts with Avast 5 but appears I was wrong in this assumption, but am very reluctant to uninstall it for the reasons you stated in your post. In conclusion, I appologise without reservation if I have been a bit over critical of the Avast developers and their problems of recent. Where did I leave my hair shirt
Avast 5 working very fine with my computer and even reduces the amount of memory usage… compare to version 4.8
I just have to wait until I get the driver from my programmer then back to avast 5.0 in my laptop
Damn just because of that I won’t have a new pc
Anyway somehow this laptop is not bad at all ;D
Hope the version .399 fixes most bugs
