aVast 5 shield shut down randomly

Since upgrading from (free) ver. 4.8 to (free) ver. 5, almost every day–several times a day–one or more of the shields simply shut down, leaving my PC “unprotected”.

Why? And is there a setting to fix this, or do I just have to keep looking at my AV all day to see if I need to restart some of the shields? Very annoying.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

Did what you suggested: uninstalled, reinstalled the fresh download.

Hasn’t worked. It has, perhaps, decreased the number of times in a day it either shuts down some (or all) of the shields, or is in “an unstable” state, but it’s still doing the same thing.

I’m about to jump ship and go back to unnamed product.

[addendum: Who changed the name of the other AV product to “unnamed product”? I don’t appreciate that. Surely, if you believe in aVast strongly enough, you can tolerate a competitor’s name in the forums. Sheesh, how childish…]

Are there any unpXXXXXXX.mdmp files in the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Alwil Software\Avast5\log ?

Actually, they’re in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log. There are 9 of them. What am I supposed to do with them? Opened them in metapad (notepad alternative), but it’s all gibberish.
