It doesn’t have that affect on my system, unfortunately you don’t give any information to make any judgement as to why it might be happening.
If you have been tweaking the file system shield settings, what the contents of the folders with lots of files are, your OS, etc. etc. ?
For sure something is wrong… avast 5 does not behave that way…
Do you have any other antivirus or security program installed?
I use just kerio firewall(2.1.5 and yes i know its old but its the only fire wall i like) and avast 5 ( also windows defender)
i have changed a few settings
like look for pups
also i have told it to tell me if it finds any thing
the folder just has stuff
some are big and some are small(ranging from 0kb - 200mb
System :
amd athlon x2 ii 240 2.8ghz dual core l2 cache 2 mb
using on board card ( which takes 512mb from the ram)
2gb of 1333 ddr3 ram ( 1066 because of cpu) ( 1.5gb because of onboard card)
I don’t know if the additional option of look for pups is the cause of the additional time, but I would certainly suggest changing back the tweaks you made to see if this was the reason for the performance hit. Though what would make the greatest difference if you increased the Heuristics from Normal to High or if you changed the Sensitivity to test whole files, etc.
If that stuff as you call it includes a number of archive files and you made any changes to the Packers section then these packers would have to unpack these archives and scan the contents and that would slow scans but that should only really happen if when opening folders these files were accessed.
I don’t know how you have the folders set to layout/view the information, e.g. thumbnails, icons, list, details, etc. I generally use Details in the folder View and I can open folders to my hearts content and the scan count in the file system shield doesn’t increase proportional to the number of files in the folder.
If you monitor the file system shield’s details, Files scanned whilst opening folders what do you see happening ?
You should be able to see it cycling through the files being scanned and the files scanned count increase.
