I have a Virgin Cable internet connection rated at 50 MB download and 1.6mb upload on Speedtest.net. In reality, I usually get speeds of around 5.6 MB download and 1.6 MB uploads on private torrents. My problem is that when I have Avast 5 free installed and running, my connection speeds drop down to max 700mb d/l and around 30 u/l speeds. This feels worse than the original throttling settings used by Virgin. Any explanations re this ? Thanks
The only things that have drastically slowed my internet speeds are Outpost fw & Sunbelt fw.
I have never noticed any slowdowns from avast!, if anything, with avast! 5 my internet seems faster. 8)
Privatefirewall is very lite on my system, with Privatefirewall I seem to have a “tailwind”.
See my sig. for my specs.
Hm…can the test whole file option slow down the connection speed ???
I recommend you to use a download manager
Hi mate, can you recommend one ?
Opera has a good download manager built in. 8)
Yes, it does … fast and efficient even on dial-up.
Yep!
I noticed the same thing running on Comcast with 12MB Down/2MB up. It took MS Updates well over 24 hours to download 277MB’s worth. Uninstalled Avast 5.0 Free; downloaded and installed 48.6MB in less than 3 minutes.
Mind you; this is a newly reinstalled OS Windows XP Pro machine with a new HDD for a customer with not much running on it either.
The problem was clearly Avast 5.0 and I’m a Reseller too! ARGH!
I use Avast on 2 PC: one laptop with XP Pro SP 3 and a celeron 1.6 GHz on cable internet connection rated 32 MBit. No speed loss at all. Windows updates, OpenOffice 3.2 downloads - just as speedy as ever.
Same on the Win 7 Pro x64 Desktop using a core2duo 3.166 GHz.
Avast is on default settings.
As I said: no dropdown in rate at all.
If you want a plain Download Mananger then use
Free Download Manager Lite
