Avast 5, SSL, Stunnel, Setup??

Hello, just upgraded to Version 5(5.0.462)from 4.8. Wish I would of visited the forum before upgrading. I wondering if I did the right thing??
No major problems yet(other than 1)so I will see. Is it possible to go back to 4.8 if more problems arise?

Now to the problem. I had a message box pop up after install(see attached). I was using Stunnel so 4.8 would scan my email because I use ATT
and they require SSL mail. Avast says to disable SSL/TLS in the mail client so it can scan the mail. The mail scanner will provide SSL/TLS security itself. Do I just disable Stunnel and leave my mail client(Thunderbird)as is? How do I setup Avast? Currently it is not scanning any mail even the non SSL accounts as far as I can tell. Looks like I created a mess for myself. HELP!! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!! Darn it!!

Thanks!!

Do not use Stunnel, however would suggest you read avast! 5.x: The Mail Shield may not scan some e-mails from the avast! Support Center.

At the avast! forums Home, use the Search box to do a search for Stunnel, you’ll find quite a few posts.

Hopefully the above will offer some help until some avast!/Stunnel users can reply.

Thanks Jon_T! That helps a bunch. I will see what I can do and post my results. Thanks again!

I disabled Stunnel and set up my mail client and Avast according to the link provided by Jon_T and all is well.
Sent some test emails and Avast is scanning the incoming and outgoing email on all my accounts. The only thing
I miss is the mail scanning icon that used to show on the taskbar when Avast was scanning the mail. The main Avast
icon does spin and the scan count shows in the Mail Shield window. Looks like Stunnel is no longer needed which is
nice. ;D

Yes, that icon is gone…I think it may have been there at one point during the beta testing, but now it is no more. Whether it will be back or not I don’t know…

You are right, stunnel is not needed any more as V5 incorporates SSL into the mail shield. So you sent the unencrypted mail to avast! it gets scanned, then encrypted and sent. (at least that is how I understand it :))

Thanks spg Scott!

Not having to use Stunnel is a plus because that was always a pain to get configured both in the email client and Stunnel itself. Avast won’t be easy for the Novice user to get set up if they have SSL email though. It was nice that Avast did have a message that came up that the mail wasn’t getting scanned. I did always like the scanning icon because of the visual notification of the email scan. I turned on the setting to “Insert a note into a clean message” so I know that the email went through scanning. So far things seem OK with version 5. I installed it right over top of 4.8. Looks like the only setting it saved was the License Information as far as I could tell. Runnng Win XP Service Pack 3, AMD Sempron 3000. Thanks again,
