Avast 5 - Unable to start Mail Shield - Windows 7 / Thunderbird 3.0

Hi,

I have just downloaded Avast Ver 5 (I have used Avast on lots of PC’s for many years now) - unfortunately it will not load the Mail Shield.

It says to try the ‘Fix Now’ button which does not work, nor does any of the ‘Turn On’ buttons.

I tried manually starting the appropriate service from Windows. It trys to start but does not work, so I guess if the service does not load from Windows there is no way Avast can load it. There are no error messages

I have also tried a repair of Avast from the control panel without success.

I am using Window 7 Pro, and my mail client is Thunderbird 3.0 (Maybe this version of TB is not recognised - just a thought?)

Anyone have any idease please?

Many thanks, Adrian

Please post the log file
C:\ProgramData\Alwil Software\Avast5\log\Mail.log

tried a reboot after avast installation?
TBird 3.0 is recognized. It works perfectly with me (btw: there is an update for TBird to 3.01 available)

Another long time Avast user here - same problem for me though.
None of the Turn on buttons work for the mail scanner.
All the other features seem ok. I only use googlemail so no Thunderbird issues
for me. I have added the pop & smtp accounts to the settings in Avast but
the scanner still won’t turn on. Tried reboot - no effect.
Worth trying a re-install?

Success. A COLD reboot was required.
I shutdown fully & turned the mains power off.
On restart 10 mins later all worked as it should
Hope this helps

Unable to start Mail Shield using Windows 7 64 bit and Eudora Mail Client on my Laptop.
Sorry Wrong thread.

I too am having this problem (Mail Shield initially identified as being turned off in avast 5, with no way to turn it on). Once I start Outlook 2007, Mail Shield kicks into gear and operates (apparently) normally. When Outlook is closed, avast turns off Mail Shield again (protection status: service stopped).

I had been using avast 4.8, but was having problems with Outlook crashing with previous OS (Vista). Upgraded to Windows 7 Pro and started getting Outlook warnings that the 4.8 add-in was an issue, so decided to give avast 5 (vers. 5.0.377) a try.

Stopped getting the Outlook warning, but now wondering about avast 5’s Mail Shield. Maybe a bug that will be fixed soon…?

My mail shield was not working after upgrading to avast 5, after several install and uninstalls, which didn’t work, I opened outlook and setup my mail account. Mail shield is working now. ;D
