Today avast decided to not update itself, i ahve tried to update manually, the virus definitions as well as the program, all to no avail. Each time i try, it reports that the file is broken.

Some data removed as its not neccesarry for you to know those bits of info
Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.
It told me to use full execute (basically i took it that it meant uninstall and reinstall (which i did, and it now updates), but i have no idea whay today it suddenly decided to not work properly. Personally, i dont like uninstalling and reinstalling security software just to get it to work, for those few minutes, your unprotected (dont get me started by saying disconnect from the net(custom built computer station with all wires well and truly covered so the kiddies cant pull them out).
