Avast 5 won't install

I’m trying to install the new Avast 5 on my Windows XP Pro machine, and it gets to the Finishing Setup window and hangs -freezes the entire computer such that I have to hold the power button down to turn it off. I uninstalled 4.8 using the uninstall tool beforehand as recommended, but no good. I booted into Safe Mode and uninstalled version 5 and tried to reinstall, but same problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hm…any other antivirus before?

No. Just Avast 4.8

Welcome fellow Canadian

Follow my post where I am having the same problem:

That thread isn’t quite like my issue. I can’t even get the software to install at all. One thing I did notice when I installed it successfully on another machine is I get the option to install Google Chrome. I don’t even get this option on my Dell Optiplex that’s giving me trouble. Strange why it skips that screen all together.

I have installed the version 5 of avast on a XP sp3, restart the computer and when login appears after several seconds the computer crashs with the blue screen of death.
I had to start in safe mode and reinstall avast 4.8

Yes I have had exactly the same problem I have attempted to install it three times but it
is really messing my pc up I hope they or someone can come up with an answer

I am using the free edition of avast AV, but when I log on my avast it advises there is a new update…
well I have tried to installed this now three times but I cannot get it to work
for some reason Windows does not like it and windows comes up with a message it must close and the program disappears.it was giving me all sorts of problems and I could not get the older program to work after either after so had to restore back to an earlier date with True image 2010 so I now have the older program working now I was wondering if there is any help and will I be OK to carry on using my present program which is 4.8 home.

I may have found something. I can install successfully on a clean drive, but when I install Malwarbytes, it freezes. Malwarebytes was already installed on the machine that wouldn’t let me install version 5. I’m going to remove Malwarebytes and see if it will install. I’ll let you know the results soon.

Looks like it Wasn’t Malwarebytes after all. I’m stumped now and have gone back to 4.8
