Avast 5 won't work

So I downloaded and installed the new version (Avast 5)

It seemed to install. When I start Avast I get the following message:
“Urgent Avast! service stopped. The Avast! anti-virus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state. Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system”
“UNSECURED Your system is not protected. Please use the Fix Now button to start protecting your system”
clicking the Start Program icon does nothing.
clicking the Fix Now icon does nothing

I also get a pop-up from Windows Security Center: "Warning, your computer is at risk.

Using windows xp home and tried a fix I read on here to run aswClear.exe in safe mode but my computer says that there is no such file.

PLEASE HELP!

What other anti virus programs do you have or have you had on your system and how was it removed ???

I used to use AVG 8.5 and removed it with their uninstall through the set program access and defaults remove button. Then went into the C drive program files and deleted the file that it was still showing.

Try running this tool - AVG8.x (or higher) Remover, download tool from here, http://www.avg.com/download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

Well restored the computer and ran the AVG removal tool. Reloaded Avast 5.0.396 and still having the exact same issues. Even after using the removal tool I had to delete AVG from program files in the C drive. So here we are try try again!

Why did you restore the computer (I presume you mean system restore) you should have just run the tool from the current state.

I advise you to do a clean reinstall of avast (aswClear.exe doesn’t exist unless you have downloaded it first):

Download avast 5.0.396 free antivirus, if you didn’t save your copy or it isn’t 5.0.396 - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html?2010-01-29

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here ensure you get the version5 one, aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode[/i].- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Well thanks everyone for the help but, I decided that this is a big pain in the Avast. Gigity

I went and loaded Avira instead and everything is working like a clock, tick tock. It even found a virus that AVG had left on my computer for who knows how long.

So lets call the whole thing off for now. I’ll bookmark this page just in case I decide that Avira is as crappy as AVG. It’s certainly much much faster. Took less that 40 minutes to scan just as many files as AVG would in well over 2 hours.

Anyway BIG THANKS TO THOSE WHO SPENT THE TIME TO HELP!

You’re welcome.
