avast! 5

Having downloaded avast 5 my laptop is now saying that the antivirus programme has been stopped and my computer is not protected!! It is refusing to do anything when I click on the ‘fix now’ button. I have gone to the maintenance menu and registration section which says I am registered but still nothing is happenining - can someone please tell me what to do as I now have no protection.!!! (By the way I am very unfamiliar with the technical jargon) ???

have you tried avast repair, and restart?

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

did it work ?

can someone please tell me what to do as I now have no protection.!!!!!!
run ;D ... yeah attempt a repair like Pondus advised you; otherwise you can try to restart avast service from Computer Management (right click My Computer, click "manage", and go to services, avast is in the list ;) )

Thanks for your replies. I tried both things, repairing the programme did nothing whatsoever.
I tried the second approach and when I clicked on start it came up with the message ‘error 1075 the dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion’ ???

Before I came onto the forum I uninstalled & reinstalled to see if that fixed the problem but it happened both times.
Can anyone offer any advice please???

did you have avast 4.8 before installing avast 5? or any other antivirus program?
did you install avast 5 on top of 4.8 or did you uninstall first?

I did have avast 4.8 and didn’t uninstall it, when it gave me the option to uninstall 4.8 before installing avast 5 I clicked on yes, as I was unsure which was the right thing to do??

It should work but some have problems when doing it

try using the uninstall tool and start from scratch
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

and if you had any antivirus before avast 4.8 it is important that every trace is removed
you can fiend the removal tool here http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

Thank you very much for your help, I have uninstalled using the link then installed again and it appears to be fully functional now.
Much appreciated ;D

I have tried to install Avast! 5 on my brand new dual core 64-bit Dell, with Windows 7 – and it won’t work. In fact, If I download from the link sent to me after I ordered (which downloads a file named “setup_ais_exe”), all I get is a blue screen that reboots and reboots, etc. So I checked one of the forums and it suggested disconnecting the behavior control feature, which I did, with the same bad result.

I also tried installing the Avast 5! free edition (“setup_av_free_eng.exe”) and then using my license to upgrade – but that only resulted in the program not permitting either the firewall or email scan to be turned on and kept it in network lock mode…not very useful. Clicking around inevitably leads to the (Windows) message that the program is incompatible… (By the way, I didn’t mention it, but Windows 7 wasn’t allowing me to uninstall Avast! 5, but I found your uninstall tool (“aswclear.exe”) and have done about 10 installs and uninstalls using the tool (about 50/50 using the aforementioned setup programs).

I am exasperated and about to stop payment on my credit card. I previously used and enjoyed version 4.8, but you don’t have that for download or improvement anymore. The old 4.8 program worked on my new 64-bit Dell (which I got about a month ago) just fine.

What have you done? Why can’t I install?
