Can you give me your OS, 32 or 64-bit? Also what product of Avast are you using (Free, Pro, AIS)? 5.0.594 is the latest build…what are you using?
Have you checked in Add/Remove Programs to see if you have the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package installed on your computer? The recent MS Update that was done about a week ago also updated this package (depending on your OS) to a different version. Avast does use this, but not the .net framework, unless this is a requirement of your system.
Are you having problems running Avast or just a question re: the C++ an .net framework? Thank you.
No you don’t need .net framework for avast5.

I believe you need the c++ 2008 redistributable, these are the ones I have installed, see image.
I don’t know if avast installs that or not if you don’t have it, once you have c++ 2008 windows update should install the update to that.
Avast usually installs the needed VC++ runtime which btw, is the 2008 one.
What does it say in your Add/Remove Program list for the C++?
Did you do the recent MS Update?
Are you having problems with Avast? What version of Avast are you running?
No C++ in add remove. No avast yet. No ms update.
@DavidR: you have one version too many, you should remove 9.0.30729.17. The other one is up to date 
It’s like Java, you don’t have to get rid of the old version to install the latest, leaving security holes on your system. Can’t tell if it’s that bad with C++ though…
That was MS update as I didn’t install the update, so it looks like it doesn’t clean house or the previous version is required; just like the worst windows update item .net framework, which without doubt is the biggest pain in the ar*e I have ever come across.

Ever try to manage about 300 computers with WSUS and install .NET updates?
ugh… don’t even get me started.
Not to mention that .NET updates fail very often, there are language updates, all the versions are present… It’s a big mess.

- Do your MS Updates first as this will update your C++ and anything else you may be missing.
- You do not need to worry about installing anything special when you install Avast as it does everything by itself.
Installing Avast:
Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need and save it to your HDD:

That’s really odd that you did the MS Updates and it didn’t show up. Try getting the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package here:
Download the file (see below for links - I believe with your OS you will need the first one) and restart your machine.

After rebooting, check with MS Updates if there is a patch/update for this or not, then restart your machine if there was one. Let us know how this works.
Not the one,found right one on ms sight it is july 08.I am stay with 4.8 till thay fix 5.
Version 5.1 will be released sometime in September or October, so you don’t have too long to wait. However since the GUI is very different from 4.8 to 5.0, you may want to get used to it since 5.0.594 is stable overall. You hear the people with problems on the forum; all the other happy users don’t come here as is the general theme with any forum. But it is your decision and we respect that.
