I’ve downloaded and installed the free home edition on a Windows 7 64bit laptop and when booting, programs are being prevented from running.

When I uninstall Avast, all programs run without issue!

Has anyone got a remedy for this such as settings in Avast that I need to change?

As I said above, I downloaded a fresh copy of the Home Free edition earlier today.

With avast installed, when I boot the laptop, several windows pop up saying the various programs have stopped working and when I uninstaled Avast, the problem disappeared.

I have several spyware programs installed such as Spywareguard, Spywareblaster, Spywareterminator and Threatfire.

I should also mention that I’ve had Avast 5 running on the Laptop for several months until an Avast update was done a few nights ago which is when this problem first appeared.

Perhaps there’s a bug in a recent Avast update file !

  1. There’s no Home edition anymore, so I have to guess your version… Is it 5.1.889, which would be the latest available…!??
  2. Drop Threatfire, as avast has his own behaviour shield now…!! Also the other Spyxxxx programs aren’t needed, but this is up to you…

As asyn instruction its up to you but one spyware protection is enough.you installed 3?

I appreciate that Avast5 has spyware protection included but my problem has arisen following an Avast update so this strongly suggests to me that code written into an Avast update file in the cause of the problem.

I will remove the additional protection one at a time to see if there is a compatibility issue.

I removed all additional protection and made all of the Avast shields active, then rebooted.

All then seemed fine so I reinstalled Spywareterminator(comprehensive protection) which did not cause any issue.

Since all now seems well, I will keep both Avast 5 and Spywareterminator to protect my laptop.

I still believe its an update file from Avast that caused the issue but I will see how it goes.

Your better off running your window’s defender if it’s not on and delet spywareteminator as it’s detection’s are very low and also it’s a program from an untrustworthy company.
A good second scanner for yourself would be malwarebytes free or pro.

I was surprised to read above that Spywareteminator is quoted has having a low detection rate.

Is this comment based on testing of the software?

I only ever install what is recommended and Spywareteminator has good reviews at snapfiles.com

Dont trust everything you read, spywareterminator by iobit is rubbish and cannot be on your system with avast.

I have Spywareterminator working with Avast 5 on a 64bit laptop and all seems well.

In view of what you say, I may look to Spyware Defender instead.

Just a thought, I’ve read that Spybot is very thorough, is freeware and has realtime protection.

I mainly use Linux so don’t really have spyware issues but friends and family all use Windows.

So one can assume that Avast spyware protection is as good as its renowned virus protection and that a PC would be safe with just free Avast 5 and Windows Defender installed?

You also cant use the realtime protection of spybot, which is teatimer with avast either, as stated earlyer malwarebytes is probably the best program of it kind out there and runs alongside of avast very well and the pro version is $25 for lifetime license.
Use the search tab at the top of forum page to search for issues with iobit and why it should not be used.

Just out of interest, what is the general opinion on Threatfire?

Threatfire apparently enhances any antivirus software!

Threatfire interferes with Behavior Shield.

Stick with Malwarebytes.

I am interested in this discussion. Hope you don’t mind if I ask some related questions:

I see from your signatures that you use WinPatrol Plus and MBAM Pro which run in real time with Avast Free.

What is Windows Defender? Is this the windows firewall for Windows 7?

I am running XP sp3 and wondering if I should have a firewall too. If so, which would you recommend to run with Avast Free, MBAM Pro, and WinPatrol Plus. Is the Windows Firewall in XP good enough (I heard that it does not cover outbound traffic). I also have dialup internet so I need something lite.

Also, should I have a HIPS program. If so, which one?
