Avast 6.0.1044 not updating virus definitions, again

Lots of problems over the past few days with updating virus definitions. Happening now, and using Malwarebytes as well as Adaware.

Manual virus definition update does not take and terminates the download after about 10 seconds.: Invalid File Signature. Same as previous issue two days ago.

Any thoughts will be greatly welcomed.

Point one would be get rid of adaware, aside from it not really keeping pace with malware developments, its AdWatch resident protection could block/conflict with avast.

OK will do and also should I uninstall Sandboxie which I installed earlier as it was recommended in another Topic.

I uninstalled Adaware.

So now I realize that MSE is running and is it possible this is causing the conflict in running and even installing Avast?

Is it a matter of ‘either’, ‘or’, MSE vs Avast?

I realize this is an Avast forum, but which is more effective, as both are freeware and I like Avast, as they have been generous over the years.

This site above in comparing the two leaves a question mark still for me.

And the fundamental question is now: Avast or MSE?

Thoughts?

WHAT…YOU CANNOT RUN TWO REAL TIME ANTIVIRUSES NO MATTER WHAT. No wonder you have so many issues.

Personally I have never felt the need for sandboxie, but it is an option to isolate your browser, it rather depends on your browsing habits and the risk involved in them.

The web and network shields do go a long way to protecting you. As does your choice of browser; I use firefox with NoScript and RequestPolicy add-ons (helps against driveby installers, etc. etc.).

But if you have been using it for a while I would leave it.

It is essential that you uninstall MSE as that is a high likelihood where any conflict would come from.

Apparently, this past Tuesday MS updates included installing MSE.
I had not previously added MSE.

I am ok with uninstalling MSE, and Sandboxie which I installed only today.

Will report later this weekend. My mind is fried, over all this.

But, all the Avast forum responses have been terrific.

Gotta rest my brain.

There is absolutely no need to uninstall Sandboxie. OTOH, you cannot have MSE installed at the same time as Avast.

MSE cannot be installed automatically by Windows Update. Thats impossible. Installing MSE is something you did.

I don’t believe it included MSE, but it usually includes the Malicious Software Removal tool, which is different and I always decline.

No need to decline it. Doesn’t run in real time.

I decline it as well. Absolutely useless unless you are already infected.

I don’t care if it runs in real time or not, I know my system is well protected by avast, etc.

I’m also not providing MS with any data, you do know it gathers data don’t you.

Hi,
For the past two weeks I have not been able to update definitions. I even removed the old version I had and installed new version with no luck. No idea what to do, the only other antivirus thing I have is spybot and I have had both avast and spybot working together for over two years with no problems.
I need help!!!
Thanks

@ buncer,

It would be best if you open up a new thread of your own so it doesn’t confuse this thread as you have different issues from the original person who opened up this thread.

Go to this link, http://forum.avast.com/index.php, scroll down to the Avast Free/Pro/Suite forum and click it, click the New Topic button at the top of the list and post there. You can cut and paste your post here to your new thread and we will help you in the new thread. Thank you.

@ rjl24,

How to uninstall MSE: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2435760/, then reboot your machine.

If you have problems with Avast after this, which is possible since you had 2 AV’s on your machine at the same time, try an Avast Repair first:

  • Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > Avast Antivirus.
  • Scroll down and choose Repair function in the pop-up window.
  • Reboot.

If this does not help, you may need to uninstall / boot / do a clean install / boot again.

Let us know how this works out. Thank you.

I too started having problems with my whole system & Avast after the update. I didn’t know if it was the update for “Windows Live Essentials 2011” or the “Security Update for Microsoft.NET Framework 1.1 SP1”.
I did a sys restore also, and at least the Avast is running now.
Any ideas on if this is more Avast 6 (At this time) with Vista; The Vista updates; or just a crazy combo of it all.

Windows *@!%^%! Vista 32 user.

@ Franzy,

You stated that your problems began after upgrading Avast from a lower version to 6.0.1044? What version were you using prior to this?

When you did the system restore, are you now back to a prior version of Avast or are you still on the v.6.0.1044? Also, when you did the system restore, did this revert your update for Win. Live Essentials back to an earlier state? You may want to double check this as well as see if your other software is up to date as well if you did a system restore by going to Secunia PSI http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/ and running a free scan; this site gives you the vendor’s direct download making it easy to update your system if needed and most of us here use this scan weekly. There will be a huge M$ Update this Tuesday, so you will want to do this prior to then.

If your other software in your machine are up to date and Avast is working fine, please let me know exactly what issues you having going on now. Also, please let me know what other security software you have on this machine currently and in the past (including antivirus, firewall, other security software) and how you removed them as remnants can cause conflicts as well. Thank you.
