Avast 6.0.1289 and Thunderbird 8.0 Conflict

Hope I can get some help with this problem I’m experiencing:-

Whenever I try to open Thunderbird 8.0 with the Avast shield ON, thunderbird does not start. If I look in task manager it is a running process taking about 8MB of memory. My only option is to stop the process.

If I try to start Thunderbird with the Avast shields OFF, it loads no problem at all, every time. I have opened and closed Thunderbird in quick succession many times with the shields OFF.

What can I do to enable Thunderbird to open with the Avast shields ON? It is as though the Avast shields are stopping Thunderbird from running, but I get no error messages or prompts from Avast or Windows.

System is running Windows 7.

Thanks!

Hi,

What you can do is to add Exclusion for Thunder Bird in avast!. For that what you need to do is…

Open avast! GUI → Settings (top right corner) → Exclusions → Add the path for Thunder Bird.

Try to access Thunder Bird with avast! shileds ON and post back the results.

Have a wonderful day. Good Karma!

Avast works fine with thunderbird 8 so maybe your TB or avast is corrupted, dont know if it will help but try an avast repair or reinstall of TB

The exclusions in settings are purely for ondemand scans and will have no effect to the opening of TB, if exclusion were to be placed they would have to be file shield and maybe behaviour shield.
As i already mentioned exclusions are not neccessary.

Hi, Thanks for the responses:

I’ve tried adding exclusions and doesn’t make a difference.

Reinstall: I have reinstalled Thunderbird and Avast and this too makes no difference…still behaves the same…

Any other security installed on your system that may interfere, also run some scans on your system with avast and malwarebytes just to make sure you dont have any nasties.

Other than that i cant help much, another member might know something more ?

There is always the TB 9.0 beta you could try if your comfortable with beta’s http://www.filehippo.com/download_thunderbird/

@ craigb

Its seems both our work arounds didn’t worked here…

@charlie2006

As craigb mebntioned here first do a scan using Malwarebytes. You can download it from

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe

Make sure that your computer dosent have any other security softwares.

You can access the following link

http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/

to download the removal tool to remove other secuity softwares if you have any.

Once done reboot the machine

Once rebooted, we are going to do a trial and error method here.

Try to disable only one shiled of avast! at a time and try to access TB. Thus we can find, if any particular shiled is blocking TB. Please update us back.

I didn’t expect my suggestion to work as ( dont know if it will help but try an avast repair or reinstall of TB ) it was just a process of elimination.

On the other hand iyogi you are tech support for avast and should be alot more clued into the workings of avast and not make simple mistakes on where to place exclusions :o

And dont good karma me as i might smash my computer :-X

SOLVED

Many thanks craigb and iYogisolutions1 - your posts prompted me to look at Online Armor that I have running.

Somehow Thunderbird was not on the programs list (allowed). Although the program guard was not switched on, it must have been stopping thunderbird in its tracks. Now added and all appears to work ok.

Thanks again for your assistance,

No worries, glad you found the problem

Hi.

Great to hear that you fixed the issue…

Hi Charlie2006,

I’m an OA user.
If you don’t use Program Guard in OA but only the Firewall protection, then you had better to turn off HIPS feature to avoid similar issues in the future.
You should also consider that the Anti-Keylogger needs the Program Guard to be enabled in order to work.

Just in case: click on the tray icon and choose “Deactivate HIPS Feature”. A reboot will be necessary.

This is only a suggestion. Also, sorry for my English.
