avast 6.0 and XP problems (shutdown and continuous scanning)

Adding IntelliType to the ignore list prevented scanning of all the programs in its list.
But isn’t that a bit scary?
If you exclude a program then programs and file accessed from that program are not scanned.

Like: I excluded “itype.exe” but “itype.exe” accessed the other program (probably to see if they are still there or to get the icon or something) but none of them are now scanned. Isn’t that a potentional risk?

So if you start a program via keyboard hotkey, the program is not scanned as it is loaded/started? Are you sure?
I simply don’t believe that.

Took a look at the hijackthis log.

There is a lot of stuff I don’t know anything about, and a lot of leftovers (Forefront Endpoint Protection for instance etc.) and some tweaks to the system. I see Webwasher is running also.

I dare not give any advice, I am not specialist enough. Anyway it looks to me, that on this system a lot of tweaking, installing and uninstalling, testing and specific network setting has been performed in the past.

If it was my system, I would probably set up the whole thing anew.

Maybe someone else has better knowledge and will give detailed advice.

You are right. It didn’t help. Seemed to help once.
But not the next time. Too bad.
Strang thing is that this was no problem before I upgraded to 6.0.
But now it is persistent (didn’t help downgrading).

I can’t quite see anything wrong in the log. Forefront Endpoint Protection is for connection to Microsoft server at work (to use applications there). A standard Microsoft product. Have used that for a long time without any problems. What other “tweaks” did you see. I see nothing wrong when I check.

BTW: Tried without WebWasher as well. And my system has very few resident programs and services.

This is, in my opinion, a mere settings problem.

You could go through all the settings of file shield, network shield and general settings.
Maybe add the folder where intelli stores this list to the exclusion?

An update for those having some of the same problems:

  1. Converting filesystem from FAT32 to NTFS fixed the hanging at shutdown issue with 6.0

  2. Converting filesystem to NTFS also fixed the continunous scanning of “avastUI.exe”

  3. The long delay when starting something using the MS IntelliType keyboard software is due
    to IntelleType checking all programs it knows about (it stores all programs ever started
    on the system). This triggers avast! scanning of those programs, and the longer the list
    the longer it takes the first time you start somthing from and IntelliType key.

BUT: I have found a way to help on this. It’s a bit “naughty” but it works :slight_smile:

First you need a regsitry file “itype.reg”

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\IntelliType Pro\AppSpecific]

This will delete the list of programs IntelliType stores to prevent them beeing scanned

The you need a batch file to replace just starting “itype.exe”.
If you start this “itype.bat” instead it will flush the list and then start “itype.exe”

@regedit /s itype.reg
@start itype.exe
