Avast 6.0 free crashed my system!! help

Hello everybody!
I have a pendrive usb where i have created a file “autorun.inf” because i wanted to show an icon and a name to make it more personal, but when I insert it in my computer where i have avast 6.0 free, my system freezes and i can move only the mouse arrow. :cry:
If I deactivated avast before insert the pen drive this doesn’t happen and i can continue to use te pc.
When I insert a CD that contains another file “autorun.inf” and I have avast actived this doesn’t happen.
what is the reason for this behavior? ???

I have Win7 Pro SP1/Avast 6.0 free/COMODO Firewall 5.3

Please help me! Thanks to all

Avast probably does not like the way your autorun is formated - and thinks it is malware or you have a badly formatted autorun and it is freezing the system

I tried to use the pen drive as boot-disk to install ubuntu on another computer. Completed the creation of the USB boot-disk , there was a file “autorun.inf” on the pen drive.
So I removed the pen drive and I inserted it again. just I inserted it again my system crashed. Why this behavior again? ???

Sorry for my bad english! Please help me!

Could you copy the contents of the autorun.inf and paste it here

[autorun]
open=wubi.exe --cdmenu
icon=wubi.exe,0
label=Install Ubuntu Netbook

[Content]
MusicFiles=false
PictureFiles=false
VideoFiles=false

The same file on a cd doesn’t makes problems.I tried to change pen-drive but I have the same problem

Looking at that and the fact that it works from a CD makes me think that you have a problem with your USB hub. Do other USB drives work OK ?

I’m trying to understand what does not work if the hub or my pen drive.I insert my pen drive to another computer and there I have always avast and the same OS (Win7), but the system doesn’t freeze. ??? ???

In that case it would suggest that the USB hub on the problem computer is at fault.

Could you go to device manager and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks

For a moment it works good and for another moment non works…I’m very confused!!!
There are no yellow exclamation marks in device manager.

I feel that your USB hub within the computer is failing - based on the USB working on another system with no problem - you will neeed to replace it

+1 on HW issue, nothing to do with avast.

Nothing to do with avast?? But if avast is deactivated there are no problem with the pen and the autorun.inf file. If avast is active the system freezes. avast is involved!!!

Yeah, avast! is involved - more stress to faulty HW → more errors.

So you’re saying that because of hardware problem, avast is working badly and crashes the system. Do I understand you correctly?
On the other PC I have the same HW…but I don’t understand why on the PC where maybe I have the HW problem, sometimes, especially when I just copied or created the files the problem is absent untill I reboot the PC.

No, that is not what I am saying at all. I am saying that there are more chances for the HW errors to manifest when the HW is being used (such as, files on USB stick being scanned by an AV on insertion), not that avast freezes your system.

I tried to see the settings of avast on the second computer and I saw that are different from the one that crashes with the pen drive with the file autorun.inf.
The differences are in “File system protection” advanced settings.

The settings on first computer are: The settings on second computer are:
-scanning during opening/analize all files YES NO
-scanning during writing/analize all files YES NO
-archives of files/all the packers YES NO
-sensibility/heuristics sensibility/HIGH YES NO / NORMAL
-sensibility/sensibility/makes tests on entire files YES NO
-sensibility/sensibility/make scan for PUP YES NO

So,I decided to change the settings on the second PC to make it how the first.I tried to insert the pen drive with the autorun.inf and…also the second crashed.
I tried the same operation on my laptop (ASUS N61Jv with windows7 pro).Also the laptop go in crash.
I’m thinking that the problem can’t be of the USB hub becouse three hub corrupted in the same time is improbably.
Moreover the same problem occurs with SD card on laptop.

Well, What is the real problem?

Help please! I’m very confused ???

The problem occurs on all pen drive I have and all SD and on all PC if I set avast in the same way (that i consider the most secure).

I’m sorry I wanted to summarize and combine everything I wrote in only one post ::slight_smile:

I think I solved the problem! :slight_smile:
I formatted the pen-drive and I changed the file system into FAT32 from NTFS.
Now the problem seems solved…hopefully good

Thanks to all for the help given
