Avast 6.0 – run on XP–SP2?

I have two questions…

Will avast 6.0 run on XP (home)-SP2? According to this link it will. I can not update to SP3 on my system as there are 2 updates contained in SP3 that crash my system (KB916595; & KB951748). I know, I know, SP2 is beyond support. But for now I’m stuck on XP (Windows Media Ctr) - SP2.

Second question…
I’m still running on 5.0.677 as the last update had problems with “safely removing USB device”. If the answer to question 1 above is true, can I update from the tray icon of 5.0.677? Or… do I need to download ver 6, uninstall ver 5 and install 6?

If the answers to question 1 above is no, how long with avast 5.0.677 be supported? (sorry, I guess that’s 3 questions). ::slight_smile:

Thanks.

The fault is in your ZoneAlarm firewall, not in SP3 or those two hotfixes. You need a newer fixed ZA version or switch to a less broken firewall.

Thanks for your reply,

That’s true with the one update (KB951748), but the other one causes BSOD. It was a ‘hotfix’ that DELL insisted on getting installed. When we did, the PC was down a whole week while rebuilding it from scratch.

Anyway, will 6 run on SP2?

In any case, avast 6 should run perfectly OK on XP SP2…

Thanks
Vlk

From KB916595

On a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that is using certain network adapter drivers and certain host firewall software, you may receive a Stop 0xD1 error message that resembles the following ...

KB951748 will “just” cause you to lose internet conectivity with ZA

Yeah, Avast 6 will work w/ SP2.
No, Avast 6 will not fix your vulnerable OS.
Yes, your firewall software is heavily broken.

Thanks Vlk. Appreciate your timely reply.
