I discovered new 6th version of avast and clicked upgrade. After restarting computer my sidebar with gadgets became “messy”. Panel started but gadgets didn’t display properly. for example notes didn’t show at all. In fact neither of gadgets was working. Fortunately I had recent windows restore point and my vista rolled back avast! to the 5th version. Sidebar works again.
I didn’t make screenshots but hope you will be able to reproduce the issue. after installing the 6th version new avast gadget was added to the panel. I tried to delete it but it didn’t help. Also two reboots didn’t make any difference. Problem persisted. I didn’t notice other problems with avast but as I said I have returned back to 5th.
I use Vista Home Premium, Russian with latest updates and service packs.
I have the same problem with Windows 7 64 bit. Gadgets move, end up on top of each other etc. This happens occasionally on rebooting but more often on switching user. It is really quite tiresome. I had assumed it was a windows issue until I came upon this post Windows 7 desktop icon’s keep moving. If you scroll down you will see ColKilgore posted that removing Avast fixed the problem for him!
I wonder if the Avast developers are aware of this problem and if so are they going to address it?
you opened me eyes. I always had issue with icon rearranges. But couldn’t even suspect it’s because of avast. it happens even with 5th version which I now run.
I am on version 6.0.1091 on one of my PC’s and some version of 5 on another - both Windows 7 but different flavours. Both PCs have issues with gadgets moving - so I’m now blaming Avast pending further information - LOL
The problem appears when you have more gadgets than will fit in one column on the right of the screen. Then you change user and change user back to the one with the gadgets. It gets even worse if both users have a number of gadgets they want arranged other than in a single column down the screen.
I’m using Windows 7 - it happens with both switching user and logoff - log on to another user and then log off and log back on to the original user. It sometimes happens at reboot and sometimes on user switching and sometimes with just a logoff-relogon to the same user. I don’t know how to switch off user swtiching on 7 - can it be done? I have dropped a couple of screenshots on sendspace for you. Asd you can see twitter and the Avast gadgets move to the right overlaying the ones that are their already.
Are you absolutely sure that this is caused by Avast? If you uninstall Avast, then the problem is gone?
I see a lot of tools, tweaking stuff and so on that I don’t know… “ShadowPro Desktop” etc.?
I’m not absolutely sure, no. But as shadowprotect will make an image backup on Thursday night I will try to remember to download Avast 6, disconnect ethernet, uninstall Avast, test user switching and then re-install Avast, reconnect and report back on Friday.
P.S. - Sorry - only just noticed the additional options. :-[
Thanks for your cooperation. We’ll see if it’s really Avast-related.
If it is, I will point that to developers, but I do not have too much hope that there will be a quick fix, at least in this version of Avast as this “little” problem does not hamper the functionality neither of Avast nor of Windows.
Currently the developers are starting hard work on Avast 7 - so if the problem is Avast related, there is hope that it will be straightened out with the next major version update, if we can supply enough information to nail down the reason.
So please keep your help going, it is very valuable.
I have just repeated avast upgrade. The program upgraded to 6.0.1091. After reboot sidebar got new avast widget. Other widgets work as well, the problem didn’t appear again. Hope this is because it has been fixed since 1000 otherwise it can repeat later with someone else.
But not sure if the problem with widget moving has gone away. Will monitor it and if it repeats I will get back here

I feel I have to conclude that this is a Windows 7 issue and nothing to do with Avast - it is also semi-random in that it has occurred at reboot and at switching users by logon/logoff as well as a straight user switch. Just another Windows annoyance to be lived with I guess!
