Questions:

  1. Did you use the new Avast Uninstaller Tool? http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe

  2. What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:

  • Antivirus (AV)
  • Firewall (FW)
  • Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
  • Other security software
  1. Is your machine up to date with MS and software patches? Try doing a scan with free Secunia PSI to be sure http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal/; the vendor’s link for a patch/update is provided to make it easy if a patch is needed. Most of us here scan weekly with Secunia PSI.

  2. Since Avast v.6.0.1021 is a Pre-Release, it has fixed many of the problems from the previous versions. I would suggest using this version. Here are the download files:
    Free: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1021/setup_av_free.exe
    Pro: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1021/setup_av_pro.exe
    AIS: http://files.avast.com/files/beta/6.0.1021/setup_ais.exe

Make sure you uninstall the current AV you have on your system PRIOR to doing a clean install of Avast, and rebooting your machine. http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/

I would also suggest running a cleaner, like CCleaner prior to installing the new version of Avast as well. CCleaner is a free system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. There is a Slim version available as well at http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds – 4th option down. It removes unused files (cache, temporary Internet files, etc.) from your system, allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

Let us know if this fixes your problems. Thank you.
