Altho Avast screensaver works fine on my 7 desktop, neither version 5 or latest version works on my Vista (no jokes, please :)) laptop. Saw old forum topic which suggested that would be resolved, but…Any simple/newbie fixes would be appreciated. Thanks.
Does it fail with any other screensaver as the background? Which one are you testing?
Any other screensaver fails in your system?
Tech,
can’t get that far. nothing happens when I click “settings”. same w/ “preview”. when I do the same on the machine running 7, Avast popup appears. I have checked that the avastSS.scr is installed in system32 as well as in C:/windows. tested the files and they work fine, just not automatically as screensaver. thanks!
actually, the “AvastSS.scr” file installed in system32 did NOT work. copied the “avastSS.scr” from C:/Windows which worked, & replaced the corrupt one with it in system32. Hope this helps others with this problem ;D
Strange…
Anyway, glad you’ve sorted it out.
Tech,
Thanks! Life is, as you quoted, beautiful when you’re able to figure these little things out! It would be nice to know if anyone else had this problem or if my laptop is just very special
Never had this. Anyway, next time it’s better to do a repair of avast from Control Panel than copying files manually.
tried repairing both version 5 & 6. Also tried complete Revo uninstall and reinstalls. Am thinking it was corrupt file in 5 that carried over to 6 since neither versions’ screensaver worked with Vista. No big thing, but little things like this makes me dogged
I suggest an installation from scratch:
- Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
- Download the latest avast! version and save it.
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
- Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
- Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
- Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
- Check and post the results. If, for any reason, you did not solve, try doing the step 3 in Safe Mode anyway.
Tech,
Copy & replace seems to have done the trick.
But if problems pop up again, I’ll definitely try installations in safemode as you suggested.
Honestly, I don’t think that was the issue.
I run the avast full scans frequently as well as Superantispyware scans, so I don’t think it was a virus.
But MAYBE since no one else encountered this problem…
Again, thanks.
Odd
I do not have avastSS.scr in sys32 just windows
DavidCo,
could be that my Vista is 64bit?
on the desktop running windows 7, all screensavers are in 4 places…
