Avast 6 update Uncompatable

We have a little problem. We purchased avast antivirus for our school computer lab running windows 2000 everything was working fine until some of the computers updated to version 6.0 via the avast console. Now those computers won’t start the Avast service. What do we do know? How can I make sure that no user can open up the avast console from the task bar and upgrade the rest of the computers? And how do I get all the ones that have been upgraded working again? Need help quick as the school year has begun. Thanks

What version of avast did you have before the update to avast6 ?

I don’t know/remember exact requirements about older versions of Avast, but Avast 6 under Windows 2000 needs at least SP4 and Update Rollup 1 to be installed too.

Do you have your Avast database updated before the problem started? I ask because about a few days ago ( 2011AUG05 ) there was a problem under Windows 2k that was resolved by a manual full VPS update.

Avast5 also needed that, but I don’t know if avast 4.8 did which is why I asked what the previous version was.

It was 5.0.667 I believe. I don’t know if the database had updated. I assume so as it is automatic and the engin update is not.

I rather doubt this would be from a virus definitions and engine update, possibly a corrupt installation.

If you have updated to avast6 from the last version of avast5 I would suggest that you try a clean reinstall (assumes you are using avast Pro) on one of these systems:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1203 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 5.x and 6.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
