Avast 7.0.1474 chokes bandwidth

My downstream speed as an example is usually around 15-20 Mbits, however once Avast is activated it drops to 1-2Mbits. That is ridiculous and basically makes Avast useless now. After turning off Avast, my speeds return to normal. I’ve tried re-installing completely (also had the network shield suddenly deactivated itself and refuse to start, so re-installed because of that). This doesn’t matter which browser or program is being used. Any ideas?

This is a fresh install of Win8 pro with latest updates.

Thanks

Try to turning off the network shield only.

It’s the network shield. I had a similar problem with a 100Mbps link. All shields on: 20-40Mbps. Network shield off: 80-90Mbps. It’s not CPU use, not NIC bandwidth/drivers. Subsequent runs with network shield on give better results once it’s been temporarily disabled. Private LAN seems unaffected. I’ve seen this on WinXP & Win7. Firefox & IE. Haven’t tested Win8 yet.

Edit: Wrong links removed.

Thanks, yea its the network shield. With the network shield disabled, the remainder of Avast still running, I pretty much have nearly all of my 20Mbits still. Hopefully this will be fixed in the future, as it seems like a pretty obvious oversight, but I’m no software programmer.

Cheers all

Well I hate to revive this, but looks like it wasn’t that simple after all. Disabling the network shield only doesn’t always solve the problem. It seems rather random, sometimes it works, sometimes I have to disable all of avast and re-enable a few times as well as fiddle with the network shield or I lose 2/3 of my bandwidth. This is rather ridiculous. Hopefully there will be a fix soon, but otherwise I may be looking at going with AVG or something in the mid term.

Try disabling web shield, too. I have noted severe thrashing of boot HDD/SSD when doing line speed tests via speedtest.net. I wonder if it’s related to router access issues people have. Could be due to Adobe Flash interfaces.

[OS not mentioned in the sys info of the OP] The W8 aswnet.sys BSOD.1474 problem may be related. I’ve got poor network performance on my W8 machine [again, after the patch Tuesday application. Other things gone poor too such as printing local and over network suggesting interrupts eating]. That said, since the distributed computing calculations run at 99.6% and greater efficiency, a 24/7 activity, that would negate this impression].

W7 does great, as always. Release .1474 too.

Hi guys, could you please mention your avast version (if it is Free/Pro or Suite with firewall) and Windows OS version. Things are a little different on every platform (for example the network shield problems mentioned here are ONLY exclusively limited to Windows 8 - on other platforms there was no change since 1426).
