Hi, since upgrading to Avast 7 each time i plugin a usb memory stick it takes a little time to be able to manage the files on it, i didn’t have this issue with avast 6, it appears like avast 7 scans the device each time i plug it but it is not fast enough and i always have a lag…
I believe that Avast! does not read the content of the USB stick unless you open a file in it. So it must be something else.
When the content is software there’s always a kind of delay (usb or cd’s), if the content is music only (mp3s) there’s no delay.
Have you made any changes to the file system shield ?
As iroc9555 said avast only scans files that are accessed/run (depending on file type), hence the name on-access scanner.

No, i haven’t made any changes. and i agree, when the files (software) are accessed avast is scanning those files that’s why the lag… but that didn’t happen with avast 6, a little annoying that lag.
I don’t see that happening in avast7 as I regularly connect an 8GB USB stick for my program backups, etc.
That has about 1.5GB of data on it and connecting that to my system doesn’t generate any delay and avast only scan a couple of files (autorun.inf which is there as a blocker against autorin inf malware). Now actually generating the image created some activity. So from the first image capture start figures were 1214 files scanned and after insertion of the usb stick and capture it was showing 1219 files scanned.
Opening folders on the USB happen almost instantly and after the first instance where some files were scanned (scanned files now at 1245), subsequent folder openings resulted in no further increase in files scanned. Some of that activity was actually related to being on-line and composing this post whilst running the test.
So I’m unsure what is happening on your system, one possibility is if windows indexing is enabled I don’t know if that would generate access activity, resulting in the file being scanned.

In my case takes like 10 seconds and yes after the first instance where some files were scanned subsequent folder openings result in no further increase in files scanned.
Well the problem remains with this new version. Access to USB files are slow due to Avast! and no, i didn’t happen with version 6.
You could change the File System Shield (FSS), Expert Settings, Report file settings to include OK items. Whilst this will greatly increase the amount of reporting (and size) in the log file, C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\report\FileSystemShield.txt.
This is only a temporary thing (do it just before your test), stop and start the FSS to ensure that the setting change is applied; now plug in your USB (making note of the exact time).
Open the log file, scroll to the time and copy and paste the files scanned. This will give if an exact list of the files scanned and should give a good indication of why (e.g. if they are related to auto-run items, see ### below or if files are being accessed an idea of what might be accessing them).
Avast 7 is different to avast 6 in the way it deals with auto-run items (so there can really be no comparison), FSS, Expert Settings, Scan when attaching, Scan auto-run items when removable media is attached.
I unselected the option “analize usb keys during connection” and now is working as it should fast… as a i said it was avast 7…pretty sure it was affecting my ipod touch and itunes opening too…
Sorry but by failing to analyse you are effectively shooting the messenger instead of finding the true cause and hopefully rectify it.
Also by unchecking that option you could be leaving yourself less well protected.

Thanks for trying to help, but this issue not happening to you is not enough proof that avast 7 has not “issues”. Of course the same applies to me, but at least i have 3 pc’s having the same behavior on my side with avast 7 so…
itunes doesn’t freezes any more!!! can you get that?
and me blaming iTunes all this time…
